Obituary

Timothy J. Deierling of Laguna Niguel, CA passed away on December 16, 2008, after a courageous 2-year battle with cancer. He was with some of the people who were most meaningful to him, and he was an inspiration to all of us in his fight to survive. Many of us who could not be with him had the opportunity in the last days of his life, to thank him for his great friendship. Tim was born in Hawarden, Iowa on January 26, 1955 to Fred and Dianne Deierling. He spent most of his early years in Carroll, Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1978. Tim’s hard work and dedication to JCPenney led to many significant assignments with the company culminating in appointment as District Manager for all JCPenney stores in the southern half of the Los Angeles area.

All of us who knew Tim well appreciated the timing, appropriateness, and dryness of his sense of humor. Tim was known for his love of the Beatles and their music, BMW’s, and good scotch. He was to the end a fierce fan of the Denver Bronco’s and loved to educate anyone that would listen about the dominance of Iowa Hawkeye wrestling.

Tim is survived by his wife Cathy Holt and her children Kimberlee and Greg; a brother Dave Linda of Ramsey, MN; a brother Bill Marlene of Buena Park, CA; one aunt, Irene Marstrelli of Stillwater, OH; two nieces, Amy Deierling of Minneapolis, MN and Rebecca Deierling of Mandan, ND; and so many great friends, neighbors, and business associates. He was taken from us far too early, but we all will hold his memory in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

  1. Tim, you were taken far too early from those of us who mourn your passing. I already miss talking to you and hearing your voice.
I have struggled to write some sort of tribute to you that would do you justice, but realize the feeling of loss over shadows the ability to find the right words. Of course if you were here, I could ask you for help, you always knew how to phrase things the right way
I will miss your quick wit and dry sense of humor. You always kept me on my toes. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you and your leadership. You led by example and always with the highest of standards. You recognized talent and mentored many who shared your appreciation for the integrity of the JCPenney philosophy. Above all, you were a straight shooter and treated people with respect and honesty. Tim, there was truly no limit on how far you would have risen in the company.
I enjoyed talking about our common interests, and the more than occasional “°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã…”sarcastic humor”°Ã¢”šÂ¬Â challenge we shared.
But sadly, bad things happen to good people. You put up a fierce fight for 2 years against the cancer, now you can rest and have peace in heaven with your Mother, Father and Bo. You are a precious soul with whom I was very fortunate to cross paths and get to know. Not only has a company lost an integral leader but I have lost a dear friend.

  2. I had the pleasure of working with Tim for the last 3 years and really liked and respected him. I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. Even though I have not had the pleasure of meeting his family or his close friends, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and those that were close to him. I will miss him very much.

  3. Rick Rico says:

I learned many things from Tim and he shaped me to be a better store manager. He once told me, “Rick, there are three things a person does not say enough of. They are ‘please, ‘I’m sorry’ and ‘thank you’. I was lucky to have heard all three from Tim. Tim, I thank you for having met you and working for you.

  4. John Reiling says:

All I can do is state as so many of his other classmates and friends have done, that it was a great joy to have spent time growing up and knowing Mont. He truly did defy stereotypes and peer pressure to forge his own views and pleasures of life. He will be missed by all, but my memories of our antics and those expressed by so many other people will go on forever. On the long and winding road, I wish I knew what his favorite Beatle song was, but he would probably laugh at such a narrow view.

  5. Tim will be missed! What a character. We shared many happy days and lots of Bronco football games together. He was part of our family when both Jim and Tim were in Colorado Springs at the Citadel store. He will be missed. Our best to his family.
    Jim and Katie Williams
