Obituary

Timothy J. Deierling of Laguna Niguel, CA passed away on December 16, 2008, after a courageous 2-year battle with cancer. He was with some of the people who were most meaningful to him, and he was an inspiration to all of us in his fight to survive. Many of us who could not be with him had the opportunity in the last days of his life, to thank him for his great friendship. Tim was born in Hawarden, Iowa on January 26, 1955 to Fred and Dianne Deierling. He spent most of his early years in Carroll, Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1978. Tim’s hard work and dedication to JCPenney led to many significant assignments with the company culminating in appointment as District Manager for all JCPenney stores in the southern half of the Los Angeles area.

All of us who knew Tim well appreciated the timing, appropriateness, and dryness of his sense of humor. Tim was known for his love of the Beatles and their music, BMW’s, and good scotch. He was to the end a fierce fan of the Denver Bronco’s and loved to educate anyone that would listen about the dominance of Iowa Hawkeye wrestling.

Tim is survived by his wife Cathy Holt and her children Kimberlee and Greg; a brother Dave Linda of Ramsey, MN; a brother Bill Marlene of Buena Park, CA; one aunt, Irene Marstrelli of Stillwater, OH; two nieces, Amy Deierling of Minneapolis, MN and Rebecca Deierling of Mandan, ND; and so many great friends, neighbors, and business associates. He was taken from us far too early, but we all will hold his memory in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

  1. We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Tim’s we have not had the pleasure of meeting.
Tim was more than a neighbor to us. He and his wife Kathy are our friends. I will truly miss the time we spent just hanging in my garage and kidding ourselves we had the answer to all of lifes questions.
I was inspired by the strength and dignity Tim showed us all throughout his fight.
The road through life takes us many places and we meet many people along the way. I am glad I met Tim and know I am richer for it.
Have a swift journey my friend.
    Love
    Al, Linda & Family

  2. Dave Vasos says:

    Mont, Dell, Bush, Brush Hog;
I knew Tim from the time he was 5 years old. I went to grade school, high school and college with him. I was in his wedding and he was in mine. He was a true friend to me and my wife Carolyn. We shared his journey with cancer and looked for every way we could to lighten his load with good thoughts, memories and humor.
Tim was my friend and a good soul and I will remember him always.
    Dave

  3. Nothing was more fun than spending a Friday night at the Dierlings. We’d spend the night in the basement and get a little out of control around 10:00. That was when Mrs. Dierling would call him to the top of the stairs for a short talk. He would return to tell us that we had to tone it down because his father had had a heart attack and needed to get his rest. Eventually we would settle down, but not until Mont got a little tough with us. On Saturday morning his mother would make a sit down pancake breakfast for us. It was always a lot of fun and his mother and father always made us feel very welcome.

Mont was the first Republican I knew, and was an unapologetic supporter of Richard Nixon. Those are the kind of things that made him special. I feel blessed to have had him as one of my best childhood friends. Many of us from Carrol Iowa and the class of 1973 will have Mont as a friend forever.

  4. My heart goes out to Dave and Linda, my brother-in-law and my sister, along with Cathy and also to Bill and the rest of the family. I know that Tim is in a much better place. I hope that they can all find peace knowing that we will all see Tim once again. In the meantime, Tim is reunited with his Mom and Dad in Heaven.

    All the best,

Mark and Tracey Anderson, Rachel, and Cliff and Bonnie Anderson
