Obituary

Timothy J. Deierling of Laguna Niguel, CA passed away on December 16, 2008, after a courageous 2-year battle with cancer. He was with some of the people who were most meaningful to him, and he was an inspiration to all of us in his fight to survive. Many of us who could not be with him had the opportunity in the last days of his life, to thank him for his great friendship. Tim was born in Hawarden, Iowa on January 26, 1955 to Fred and Dianne Deierling. He spent most of his early years in Carroll, Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1978. Tim’s hard work and dedication to JCPenney led to many significant assignments with the company culminating in appointment as District Manager for all JCPenney stores in the southern half of the Los Angeles area.

All of us who knew Tim well appreciated the timing, appropriateness, and dryness of his sense of humor. Tim was known for his love of the Beatles and their music, BMW’s, and good scotch. He was to the end a fierce fan of the Denver Bronco’s and loved to educate anyone that would listen about the dominance of Iowa Hawkeye wrestling.

Tim is survived by his wife Cathy Holt and her children Kimberlee and Greg; a brother Dave Linda of Ramsey, MN; a brother Bill Marlene of Buena Park, CA; one aunt, Irene Marstrelli of Stillwater, OH; two nieces, Amy Deierling of Minneapolis, MN and Rebecca Deierling of Mandan, ND; and so many great friends, neighbors, and business associates. He was taken from us far too early, but we all will hold his memory in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

My deepest sympathies to Tim’s family and friends. I knew Tim from grade school in Carroll and then on to the University of Iowa. Tim always had the best room mates at Hillcrest. We spent many an hour at the University listening to the Beatles. He will be missed but not forgotten.

  3. We would like to offer our deepest sympathy to Cathy, Linda and Dave and their family and to Bill and Marlene. As Dave’s sister-in-law I had a few oppertunities over the years to visit with Tim. I so enjoyed the chance to see Tim’s dry humor, the Deierling boys’ interaction and their banterings in action. Tim put up a couragous fight and died with the respect that he had lived his life.

So sorry for your great loss,
    With sympathy and love,
    Deb and Tony

  4. I am deeply saddened to learn that Mont, one of my best childhood friends, is no longer with us. My deepest sympathy goes out to all of Mont’s family, friends, business associates, and anyone else whose life he touched.

Some of my fondness memories as a young boy in grade school was going over to Mont’s house to play basketball in his driveway and hang out in his basement shooting his bb gun for target practice. I could tell early on that Mont was very intelligent and sophisticated in his own way, and I was proud to have Mont as my friend. His mother and father were so pleasant too, whenever I went to his house. And in high school we had so much fun doing things that teenagers do while riding in style in Mont’s old T-Bird”°Ã¢”šÂ¬?with Mont firmly and proudly in control with a big wide grin on his face”°Ã¢”šÂ¬?as we drove up and down the Carroll, Iowa drag looking for our friends and something to do. And going to the old Carroll Drive-in and then out to the Carroll Airport to give the mail plane a little extra lift”°Ã¢”šÂ¬?kind of like the “°Ã¢”šÂ¬Ã‹Å“pump it up burrito'”°Ã¢”šÂ¬?as the plane came in for its landing. Oh, those were the days Mont, and I was fortunate just to be along for the ride, and to have you as my friend.

Mont, you were truly one of kind and I’m sure you put up a courageous battle to overcome your illness. But in the end the battle just wore you out, just as it does to so many others. You’ve earned the right to rest now Mont, and I look forward to that day when you and I get to embrace each other as friends once again.

  5. Famous Amos says:

My godfather/uncle was always the one to be cracking jokes with my dad and messing with my grandma she would always get all riled I know she secretly enjoyed it I always had her back. He was the one traveling all over moving from place to place the oldies tune ” The wanderer” is quite fitting for uncle Tim. I am very grateful that I got to spend his last few days in this world with him and his smile would always make me feel better. I carry away many memories but the last was the most touching, Tim squeezed my mother and my hand when I said goodbye for the last time and he said with all the strength he had left was “ladies I just want you to know you mean the world to me” and that makes me smile. It does not matter how far away or how often you talk to somebody what matters is your bond, to be there for him in his last days is what made all the difference to me. I think Tim leaving this world has caused a huge amount of sadness but it made me sad to see him suffer, yes it was sad to all of us but to him to hold on any longer was to painful, I was happy for him that he let go and now is at peace and no longer in pain. I love my uncle Tim and my memories.

    Love,
Formely known as Famous Amos or to anybody else Amy Deierling
