Obituary

Melvin Drummond
(Mel, Drum, or Dub)
October 18, 1934 June 5, 2012

Melvin was born in Arkansas and graduated from Sparkman High School in 1953. He enlisted in the Army in 1954 and served three years. He attended Henderson College for four years and then moved to California and took flying lessons. Mel loved airplanes and flying.

He worked in management for Thrifty Drug Store and retired after 20 years. He also tried real estate for a while. Mel drove a bus for Laguna Woods senior citizens for 14 years, but cancer made him so weak that he had to quit. He really loved that job and the people he met every day. He loved his neighbors and visiting the local pastry shop each morning for coffee and pastry.

Mel is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda & David Alicea and Elena & Vinnie Bricoccoli; grandchildren, Darrel Matheisen Jr., David Matheisen, Eve Alicea, Chris Alicea, Rachel Alicea, Claudette Bricoccoli and Tristan Bricoccoli; twin sister Geraldine Presley; nieces and nephews, Beverly Jan Lynons, Karen Sue McShane and Terry Melvin Presley.

  1. Drumm will be slrsadly missed by all of his neighbors He truly was a joy to all of us and we had many happy moments because of him. Now he’s “upstairs” with Carmen who is also missed by all.

  2. Dub was a member of both our families. His maternal grandmother was a sister to my grandfather Daniel, and his maternal grandfather was a brother to Roy’s grandmother Dickinson. Dub helped Roy get his first job as the shoeshine boy at the local barber shop. Always friendly and caring, he was full of fun.
Though we were a few years younger, he always treated us like pals. Our hearts go out to his sister Gerry and all the family. Roy & Frances (Horne) Curry

I have been waiting trying to think of one memory of our dear friend Drum,Yes he is with Carmen now and also Grandma. He use to tease her . Drum was a special person who always was a happy man , He never knocked at our house he would walk in and would say , what’s the Howey’s doing to day. We shared our Christmas to-gether our sorrows to gether .
One time I remember after Drum quit work at Thrifty Drrug, He did repairs and etc on vacant homes , well he bought and old van to use well our Michael was into soccer and they wanted the boys to attend professional games in Costa Mesa, so Drum, Carmen and Elena and all the Howeys would get in that van and travel to Costa Mesa mind you there were no seats so we would sit on the floor or take along some folding chairs. We laughed and joked it was a fun time. There is so many memories that I could share about this family. We were family.God Bless you Drum for so many memories. It will not be the same to come back and not see you.
