Melvin Drummond
(Mel, Drum, or Dub)
October 18, 1934 June 5, 2012

Melvin was born in Arkansas and graduated from Sparkman High School in 1953. He enlisted in the Army in 1954 and served three years. He attended Henderson College for four years and then moved to California and took flying lessons. Mel loved airplanes and flying.

He worked in management for Thrifty Drug Store and retired after 20 years. He also tried real estate for a while. Mel drove a bus for Laguna Woods senior citizens for 14 years, but cancer made him so weak that he had to quit. He really loved that job and the people he met every day. He loved his neighbors and visiting the local pastry shop each morning for coffee and pastry.

Mel is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda & David Alicea and Elena & Vinnie Bricoccoli; grandchildren, Darrel Matheisen Jr., David Matheisen, Eve Alicea, Chris Alicea, Rachel Alicea, Claudette Bricoccoli and Tristan Bricoccoli; twin sister Geraldine Presley; nieces and nephews, Beverly Jan Lynons, Karen Sue McShane and Terry Melvin Presley.

  2. This beautiful man is at peace now. He’s home with the Lord.

  3. Dub and Geraldine are counsins of mine, and we grew up just down the road from each other when we lived in the country, after our families moved “to town” we lived across the street from each other. It’s been a long time since last seeing Dub, saw Geraldine at an Alumni Banquet a few years back in Sparkman. It’s sad to lose those we love, Geraldine, my thoughts are with you.

  4. May the peace of our Lord reside within you at this difficult time. You are blessed to know Dub is with the Lord and you will see him again. I pray for the family as you all face challenges ahead. We at Gerry’s church have had the honor to pray with Gerry and for Dub for a few years now. We continue to pray for the family.

  5. David Alicea says:

Melvin was my father-in-law. Although we only saw him when we visited California or he visited us in Arizona we had a close relationship. Whether we talked about our jobs, the kids or watched baseball game on TV I enjoyed every minute. Even when he was ill, it was an honor to help him. I am so humbled that he trusted me enough to assist him to do the most basic things he could no longer do while he was ill. I thank God for giving me time to even hold a cup of milk while he drank from it through a straw. Even then he thanked me and said “that was the best drink I ever had.” I thank Melvin for his hospitality, his good humor and love of life. He leaves behind 2 daughters, a twin sister and 7 grand children. We will all miss him. God has healed him and His angels welcome him to heaven. Rest in peace dad I will never forget you and I love you.
    Dave Alicea
