Obituary

Melvin Drummond
(Mel, Drum, or Dub)
October 18, 1934 June 5, 2012

Melvin was born in Arkansas and graduated from Sparkman High School in 1953. He enlisted in the Army in 1954 and served three years. He attended Henderson College for four years and then moved to California and took flying lessons. Mel loved airplanes and flying.

He worked in management for Thrifty Drug Store and retired after 20 years. He also tried real estate for a while. Mel drove a bus for Laguna Woods senior citizens for 14 years, but cancer made him so weak that he had to quit. He really loved that job and the people he met every day. He loved his neighbors and visiting the local pastry shop each morning for coffee and pastry.

Mel is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda & David Alicea and Elena & Vinnie Bricoccoli; grandchildren, Darrel Matheisen Jr., David Matheisen, Eve Alicea, Chris Alicea, Rachel Alicea, Claudette Bricoccoli and Tristan Bricoccoli; twin sister Geraldine Presley; nieces and nephews, Beverly Jan Lynons, Karen Sue McShane and Terry Melvin Presley.

  2. Jerry and family: May our Lord be with you at this time to comfort and surround you with His love. “Dub” is home now…..no more suffering. I know he will be missed, but you will have wonderful memories of him.

  3. I never met Melvin “Dub” Drummond, but I have prayed for him these last few years, he is home with his heavenly Father now and free of all pain of this world. The grieving I do now is for his sister Gerry who loved him so much.

  4. Maureen and I met Drum when we moved into the neighborhood 30 years ago. Early on we discovered a unique connection. When he was in the Army in the mid-1950s he had been stationed in Baumholder, Germany (H.D. Smith Barracks), and in the mid-1970s, we had worked as civilian contractors on the same army base. We gave him a book on the history of Baumholder and often exchanged stories about our exploits both on and off the base. He particularly loved Idar Oberstein, a nearby town famous for its semi-precious gems. We will miss his friendship and his unique sense of humor, which he maintained to the end. He is now rejoicing with Carmen in the presence of God.
