Obituary

Terrence Patrick Malone, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, after a heroic eighteen month battle with cancer. His wife and family were at his side. Terry was 49 years old.
Terry was a lifelong resident of Southern California, born in Los Angeles and growing up in Fountain Valley, he graduated from Fountain Valley High School and attended Cal State University Long Beach. After college, Terry settled in Leucedia, until he moved back to Orange County in 2002, living in Irvine.
Terry was a true ‘Renaissance man,’with wide ranging talents and interests, and successes in a number of fields. He began his working life as a partner in a construction business, then made a successful career in the technology industry. Always a man who followed his heart, Terry’s passion for learning had recently led him to pursue training to become a high school math teacher.
Terry loved politics, sports, music, and film. He loved conversation and the exchange of ideas, and always relished a good spirited debate on any topic!
His life long passions were spending time with his daughter Casey, music, reading, all kinds of sports, and enjoying his family and friends. One of his favorite excursions was an annual familyreuinon to Lake Tahoe, where Terry would rally family members of all ages to join in spirited games of Scrabble, Cribbage, Pinochle and Uno, or find an adventure roller blading, hiking on the ski slopes, or visiting local sites.
In addition to many caring friends, Terry is survived and loved by his wife, Connie, daughter Casey, stepsons Mark, Tyler, and Jason, his mother Betty Badgett, his sibilings, Kathy Leeks, Tom Malone, Traci Malone and Adam Badgett, and his nephews and nieces, T.D. and Molly Malone, Stephanie and Brad Leeks, and Alicia, Brooke, and Lindsay Badgette. Terry’s legacy is one of love, laughter, courage, and kindness shared with all those whose lives were touched by him. Terry’s family wishes to express their gratitude to the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and the UCI Medical Center for their wonderful care and supporr over the past eighteen months.

    Eulogy – March 22, 2007
I have known Terry since his family moved into Royal Homes in Fountain Valley in 1966. We were in 4th grade and immediately became friends. We went to Harper Elementary School and Fountain Valley High School together. We went on camping trips together, we delivered newspapers together, we played Little League together, we stayed locked inside my parents’ canvas tent in the middle of summer just to see how long we could take the heat together, I could stand up here for two hours and tell you “Terry Story” after “Terry Story.” But, instead I thought I would talk about a few of Terry’s defining characteristics.

We all have an obvious bond we all have met Terry Malone. But I think it goes beyond that. I truly believe that every one of you that has met Terry over the years has experienced some very specific attributes that Terry always exhibited: his Intellectualism, his Determination, his Caring, his Fun Loving personality, and the first common bond we all share and that has touched each and every person that has known Terry: The Famous Laugh!

    The Laugh
We all know it and we all love it! I had to start this with The Laugh. If there is one thing that we all have in common as a friend of Terry’s – it is The Laugh. Everyone in this room knows what I’m talking about! And everyone in this room has laughed not only with The Laugh but because of The Laugh! I was just lucky enough to have laughed along with Terry for over 40 years!

The Laugh kind of sets the stage for everything else in Terry’s life. Terry laughed like there was no tomorrow. It was a full and robust laugh which was how he lived his life.

    The Intellectual
To go along with The Laugh was Terry The Intellectual. Always curious for more knowledge – usually to prove he was right during his last argument – Terry always wanted to learn.

Playing Scrabble with his family was an old-time passion of Terry’s. Of course, everyone had to be armed with a dictionary to even have a shot at proving they were right if Terry challenged a word! He loved Cribbage, Pinochle and a slew of other card games.

For those of you who worked with us at Micro Visions and FutureLink you know about Terry’s thirst for knowledge. He spent countless hours of his own time learning the computer business, obtaining certifications through arduous study without the benefit of any previous hands-on experience. No one that worked with us could ever forget the sight of Terry reading a computer book to study for another certification while riding the Excercycle in his office at eleven at night — in his work clothes!

    The Determination
Coupled with Terry’s intelligence and thirst for more knowledge was his incredible Determination. Terry never gave up in anything. Whether it was debating for hours over some small, useless fact or battling cancer Terry never, ever gave up. His willpower and determination is a shining example that serves us all well.
    The Caring
Terry cared about everyone he came in contact with. You always knew that he would do anything for you at anytime. I cannot illustrate that any better than through the relationships he developed while running the technical team at Micro Visions. Terry managed a team of over 50 young, very intelligent, systems engineers during an extremely hectic time in the technology industry. They all were at the top of their game and they were all in high demand by our competition.

Every single one of those people on Terry’s team would have done ANYTHING for Terry. That was because they saw his commitment, passion and loyalty to them and what they were trying to accomplish. Terry always made it about his team and did whatever it took to take care of them. I would constantly tell anyone who would listen “we’ll take our systems engineers against anyone in the country.” This was because Terry brought this very disparate group together through one common bond he cared about each and every one of them.

    The Fun
Terry always liked to have a good time and was always finding creative

There isnt one moment of my life i spend without thinking of my dad in some way. Its hard to realize when i have a funny story or something, that i wont be able to tell him, but i know he is right next to me everday, always watching over me and seeing my great accomplishes. I could fill up hundreds of pages with the hilarious things my father has done, and all the places we have gone. I am really going to miss his tone deaf singing voice and going to mcdolands knowing we wouldnt be getting out of there anytime soon, because they never got the order right. Going to Home depot a couple times a week for about 12 years while his did our second story and apartment outside, which i couldnt be more proud of, it just took forever but i still love you for it dad, my dad using coasters as frisbees at resturants, always quizzing me on some music artist, course i never knew who it was, always helping me with my homework, on the excersize bike in his undies, rollerblading, very passionate about his debates, his huge knowledge and love for movies and music, good luck beating him in that, UNO, im really going to miss games with my dad because no matter what game it is he would make up more rules, especially in UNO, if you arent part of the UNO Malone tradition, good luck, he was so competitive in that game, it was great. But the most, im going to miss my dads laugh and silly jokes and his love. He always wanted the best for me and he always watched over me, i wont let you down dad. I love you so much. I will still show matt farley in my class. Tahoe wont be the same without you, but i know you will be there and never forgotten in anyones hearts. I miss you so much everyday.

  4. I had the opportunity to meet Terry once when I came out west to visit Connie, my Williams College pal, in April 2005. It was certainly a pleasure to meet him albeit briefly and I could see that he and Connie were very much in love. Great sadness to lose someone so young. My love to my great friend Connie.

My heart goes out to the Malone Family & Terry’s large circle of friends. I want to share my favorite “American Indian Proverb” with all of you.

DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP.
I AM NOT THERE. I DO NOT SLEEP.
I AM THE THOUSAND WINDS THAT BLOW.
I AM THE DIAMONDS GLINTS ON SNOW.
I AM THE GENTLE AUTUMN RAIN.
I AM THE SUNLIGHT ON RIPENED GRAIN.
WHEN YOU AWAKEN IN THE MORNING’S HUSH
I AM THE SWIFT UP-LIFTING RUSH
OF QUIET BIRDS IN CIRCLING FLIGHT.
I AM THE SOFT STAR THAT SHINES AT NIGHT.
DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND CRY.
    I AM NOT THERE.
    I DID NOT DIE.

My fondest memories of Terry are at family gatherings when the talk was fast & heated & mostly not understood by those of us not gifted with “MALONE SPEAK” & the games even faster more “furiouser”

And lastly I just hope that Terry & Hawk are toasting to the good old days.

    With Love & Tears,
    Becky
