Obituary

Mary Helen Tressler, who was 90 years old, passed peacefully to life eternal on September 15th2018 and resided in Placentia, California. She was a devoted woman of faith and a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was raised in a traditional Italian family in Pennsylvania with her parents, Henry & Elizabeth and her siblings, Anthony, Benny, Dorothy Jean and Catherine Anne. She met her husband James while he was on leave during WW II and they have been married and shared over 70 years of life together raising their children and volunteering their time, talent and treasure at various Catholic parishes throughout Orange County after they left Pennsylvania in 1957 and came west so her husband could pursue new opportunities to support their growing family.

Mary’s faith and belief as a Catholic was not simply a Sunday activity but was the core of what she was and what she lived. Raising four boys was not easy but she did not accept any excuse for not gathering in the evening after dinner to pray the rosary or during Lent to also have “silent time”. Although she was small in size make no mistake she was larger than life when it came time for her sons, whom she deeply loved, to be corrected, disciplined or the famous, “wait till your father comes home and I tell him”.

What made Mary extraordinary to those who knew her was the ability she had to make the ordinary special whether by her smile, her touch, her words or her faith. As she has touched us all by her life and her legacy of faith may we also remember her in our love and with our prayers.

Mary is survived by her devoted husband, James W Tressler Sr.; her sons James Jr., Robert (Sally), Dennis and Richard (Sheryll); her grandchildren, Nicole (Zack) Jukam, Alisha, Brian, Brandon & Drew (Kimberley) and great grandchildren, Haley, Barrett and Dillion. She is also survived by her brother Benny and his wife Flo, as well as 5 nieces, 12 nephews, 11 great nieces and 17 great nephews.

  1. James,

  2. To My Uncle Jim, my cousins, Jimmy, Robert, Dennis and Richard,
I was so saddened to hear about Aunt Mary (Your wonderful Mom and wife to Uncle Jim) passing and wanted to share all the wonderful memories I have had visiting with all of you the last 50 years (my first visit with Grand Pap and I in 1967 on Scenario Drive), riding to the beach on bicycles with my cousins, visiting Knotts Berry Farm with Aunt Mary, my cousins and Pap Pap, and of course Disneyland with us all as well as my last visit with Aunt Mary , Jimmy and my wonderful bride of 43 years, Peg, in 2015 who finally had the honor to meet with Aunt Mary.
I’ll never forget the “White 63 Cadillac coming up Farragut Street in 1968 with my Aunt Mary, Uncle Jim, Dennis (“The Menace” as he was lovingly called!), and Richard coming to visit Pittsburgh, PA for one last reunion with the Mannella, Daqualente, and Sepe family. There were parties almost every day they were in Pittsburgh. I developed a very special relationship with my cousin Dennis during that visit and have all those remembrances (both in Pittsburgh and California) that I still think about to this day.
I remember on one of my many visits to see all of you, Uncle Jim told me why he settled in California – Leaving the Pacific in WWII coming to California, and looking at the lush and green the California valley was. I was and still am so impressed with the love all of you and especially Aunt Mary showed me on my visits.
I looked forward when I had the chance to travel to SOCAL on business in the 80’s, 90’s, 00’s as I knew I would once again reconnect with my family. Surfing, golfing (Dennis), Tijuana (Richard, Cheryl), Mass with Father Bob and the Tressler family by their swimming pool are all memories I will forever cherish.
I am so glad on my last trip to California in 2015 that I was able to spend time with my Aunt Mary and Jimmy along with my wife Peg. Aunt Mary was so thrilled my daughter Meghan named her first daughter (Aunt Mary’s great great niece) Mary.
My granddaughter Mary will always be a reminder to me of my Aunt Mary and all of you as part of our common family – Mannella
May the grace of God be with all of you, my Uncle Jim and my cousins (My Brothers), knowing your Mom, my Aunt has now seen the shining light of our Lord and is bathing in that light with her Mother, Father, Brother and Sisters.
May God bless you all at this time of need.
    Your Nephew and cousins,
    Tony & Peggy
    Anthony III – Lyndsey
    FJ – Jessica
    Abigail, Madison
    Meghan – Steve
    Mary, Stevie
