I remember covering a high school wrestling tournament years ago for the OC Register, and on my way out I see Gomer and he stops me. He didn’t know I was writing for the Register, and asked if I could put something in the paper about his son who was there wrestling. I told him I wish I could but I couldn’t, as I simply didn’t have the time as I had to make deadline. He offered me money, but of course I declined. Then he offered to give me a UCSB hat if I interviewed his son, as he knew I went to University there. So I laughed because I do have a price and agreed to give his son some well deserved ink, as he was actually quite good. Sure enough, a week later Gomer walks into my brother’s pizza restaurant in Fountain Valley and as promised, he had a brand new UCSB hat for me. Classic! Thanks for the good memories Gomer. Your kind heart will be missed.
