Obituary

Barbara Jean Schone, age 66, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on April 06, 2007 Good Friday at her home in Mission Viejo, California after a courageous three year battle with ovarian cancer. She was a twenty-five year survivor of breast cancer.

Barbara was born on October 13, 1940 in Kansas City, Kansas, one of four children to parents John and Anna Fabac. She attended Wyandotte High School and Kansas City, Kansas Junior College. She married her ‘high school sweetheart,’ Don Schone, on May 27, 1961 and together they moved to Downey, California. Barbara was part of Downey North American Aviation during the first moon landing. In 1970 they moved to the planned community of Mission Viejo, California with their two sons, Scott and Steve. She worked for Mission Viejo Company MVC, Public Relations-Community Development, from 1971 until her retirement in 1997.

Barbara devoted much of her retired life to volunteer work and historical MVC alumni projects within the community. On February 5, 2007, she was honored with the televised ‘Community of Character Award’ by the Mission Viejo City Council. Her close family and many MVC friends attended.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Don; sons, Scott wife Kathleen and Steve; grandchildren Andrew and Annaka; brothers, Bill and John Fabac of Kansas City, Kansas; sister, JoAnn Fabac DaSilva of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister-in-law Alice Schone Adams of Athol, ID; brother-in-law, Hugh Schone of Garden Grove, California and a nephew and four nieces in California, Kansas and Idaho.

Funeral Mass and services will be held Friday, April 13, 2007 at 10:30am at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Mission Viejo, followed by a luncheon reception to celebrate Barbara’s life at the Mission Viejo Country Club and then burial ceremony at Ascension Catholic Cemetery in Lake Forest, California.

Barbara Fabac Schone’s special qualities of kindness, consideration and devotion to family and friends will be dearly missed. She will be forever in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

  1. Uncle Don,

Back when I was making Grandma’s Anna Fabac, Barb’s Mother funeral arrangements, I ran across this prayer while looking for one for Grandma’s Prayer Cards & I thought to myself as I read it, how appropriate it was for Aunt Barb & I began to tear up. I sent it to Mom JoAnn & we talked about it & she said that she would forward it to you. Please just know that it touched me when I read it!

    In Loving Memory

God saw she was getting tired,
And a cure was not to be.
He put His arms around her
    And whispered “Come with Me”.
With tearful eyes we watched her
    Suffer and fade away.
    Although we loved her dearly,
We could not make her stay.
    A golden heart stopped beating,
    Small, frail hands rest.
    God broke our hearts
    to prove to us,
    He only takes the best!

I also, found the following prayer:

    Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
    Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

P.S. Mom said that she has written something for the guestbook but cannot send it on her computer, she just wanted you to know.

    Much Love Always, Diana

  2. Don,
That’s exactly how it was, and Barb was a very special part of that family. Her fight with cancer brought back many memories of my husband’s valiant fight, which was lost almost 3 years ago. My hope is that from their fight medical science learned much, and that new research is being developed to eradicate this awful disease once and for all.

    Most sincerely, Sharon Siebert

  3. Jilll Siegel says:

    Dear Don:
You dont know me but I was Barbara’s Hairstylist for many years. I am so sorry to hear of her passing and I have thought of her often over the past years. She was very special to me. She was always up and always in love with you. It was quite an inspiration. I never even heard her be the least upset with you. Believe me I hear it all. I moved to Arizona in 2004 and talked to her one last time then. May God be with you and your family.
    Much Love Jil Siegel
…and by the way our children were married on the same day Oct 9 1999 Barabara and I shared many happy moments.

  4. Pinky Clark says:

    Dear Don,
What a privilege it was for Jim and I to share in Barb’s funeral and to be asked by the “honoree” herself. Barb was always an organizer and kept so many groups together Wyandotte alumni, MVC alumni, and, of course, our wonderful BUNCO group so of course she organized her own funeral. I will always remember the grace with which she faced her death. What an inspiration! We all had a very special girl in our “Barbie” and we can be assured we now have a special angel looking down on us from heaven.
    Love you,
    Pinky and Jim

  5. We are thinking of you and your family at this time. Please remember that you had a gift beyond measure when you had Barbara in your lives. We hope that gift sustains you through these hard times.
    Love, Jack and Mitzi Butler
