Community Workshop with Dr. Hoy

February 13 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

  • What Prolonged Grief Disorder Means for Congregations
  • Tuesday, February 13, 2024 (7:00-8:15)When the American Psychiatric Association codified Prolonged Grief Disorder in 2022, the response was swift. What does it mean for grief to be “prolonged?” How do we make sense of the apparent attempt to pathologize what faith communities have long recognized as an adjustment process after the death of a love one? And perhaps most importantly, what is our role if grief “after a year” is somehow considered “prolonged?”Dr. Bill Hoy will help us sort out what all this means for bereavement care in a community like ours and perhaps more importantly, will help us clarify what this new diagnostic criteria does—and does not mean.

Objectives. At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to…

    • Describe the factors that might predict more complex bereavement reactions for people
    • Apply specific strategies to recognize and respond to complex bereavement

This workshop is designed for congregational volunteers interested in bereavement and as an approved continuing education program for nurses. Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider # CEP 13486 (credential expires 10/31/25).
