  4. I met him just once, while calling on his wife, who was our high school teacher. That meeting left a lasting impression. He was far younger than his years, in looks and in attitude. He had a work ethic that never retired, that remained vibrant, in his gardening, in works of art that required not just an artistic temperament but skills and imagination, not to mention passion, which he marshaled with an unhurried discipline that, to him, was second nature. His stories about the battlefield, said in his matter-of-fact style, were riveting. I hope that all of us imbibe some of what he showed us in the best way possible – not by talking about it, but just being it. I feel that his soul does not need to rest in peace; that it had already found peace, made peace with this world, that he transitioned in peaceful acceptance. I am sad, but glad that our paths crossed, that I caught a glimpse of an truly remarkable being. May his earthly sojourn enrich ours. Prayers and love.
