Obituary

Thomas Christopher Basom

Taken from us too soon, Thomas Christopher Basom, aka Chris Basom, passed away Monday evening, December 6th of a sudden heart attack at the age of 62. He will be deeply missed by so many, as his positive impact on others and the community was widespread.

This comes as a shock to all who knew him, as Chris was so full of love and life. He made friends everywhere he went with his positively contagious attitude and his unique way of making you feel special, seen, and supported. Chris lived his life on purpose, with the intention to Be Kind. Those who knew him best enjoyed his strong personality, brilliant mind, silly sense of humor, his sensitive, compassionate heart, and his never-ending support and words of wisdom.

Born in Ypsilanti, Michigan to Fred and Marian Basom on June 7th, 1959, Chris grew up in a large family of 7 children. He excelled at school and took pride in being Student Body President at Loara High School, which contributed to his love of healthy debate. A problem solver and numbers guy, his tax and financial planning business of over 30 years served countless people in the community with humor and kindness as they navigated their financial journey.  Being a good father and a loyal husband was his top priority and he always made himself available to process through life’s ups and downs with those he cherished. His passion for soccer and being with his children led to volunteering with the AYSO for over 20 years as a coach, referee and on the Board. In his spare time, Chris enjoyed building Lego and passed along that Lego enthusiasm to his grandchildren. He was a true humanitarian to the end, as an organ donor he will help hundreds of people.

Survived by his wife Trish Elliott, his children Denielle Basom, Conrad Basom and Kelly Ritchie, his grandchildren Blair, Declan, Avery and Hudson, his siblings De Anne, Terese, Jonathan and Joseph, along with cousins, aunts and uncles.

  1. As a friend and client for over 30 years, our hearts are broken and at a loss of what to say. Chris’ brain was amazing and his compassion for people was demonstrated every day. He helped us start our company and was there when we started our second. Our initial success was due to his guidance. We will never be able to duplicate his enthusiasm and motivating attitude. He taught me to be tax smart, always. He was our favorite democrat and I will miss our constant banter. We are better people and business owners because of him! He will be missed and there is a hole in our lives that will not soon be filled. We’re thankful he built an amazing team to carry on the legacy. To Trish and the “kids,” only time will make the pain lessen, but how lucky you were to have his lifetime attention. To Cathy, thank you for carrying on in true YMM fashion, Together we will grieve and remember the good times. May God hold all of you tight and bring the smiles back as you recall the great times you had. Bye Bye my friend. Til we meet again.

Chris, you will be deeply missed, my man. I hated paying taxes at the end of every year but you sure did make it fun as well as educational. Who has that kind of magic? Chris Basom did! My prayers go out to your family and loved ones.

  3. I am so sorry for your loss. Chris cared about his clients and made us feel part of the family. His bright personality will not be forgotten.

I met Chris 17 years ago, he actually made me enjoy tax preparation with his great sense of humor and quick wit. Every year when we would sit down to prepare my taxes, it always impressed me that he remembered so many details about my family.

And not lets forget his ties…

  4. I am shocked and saddened to hear of Chris’s passing. Knowing that he passed on my birthday made me feel even worse.
I’ve known Chris since 8th grade and through high school. He was the most enthusiastic and kind person any one could ever meet. He fit in with the jocks, nerds, and popular kids in school. He never changed even years after high school. Heaven has gained a wonderful person but I am so sorry that he has left so soon. His heart was so big and he loved so many.
I pray for his family at this most sad and difficult time. Until we see him again, RIP Chris! You were the epitome of a Saxon and one hell of a human being.
