Obituary

Richard Mao Chou Hong

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Richard Mao Chou Hong on July 24, 2020 at the age of 57.  He fought a courageous two-year battle with leukemia and is now at peace.

Richard was born in Tainan, Taiwan to Su-Chu Lin and Ching-Shiun Hong(deceased). He attended St. Ignatius High School in Taipei, Taiwan.  In 1986, after two years of mandatory military service in Taiwan, he moved overseas to Ontario, Canada to continue his university education.  He attended the University of Western Ontario and Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, graduating in 1992 with an Associate’s degree in Information Systems.  Richard moved to California in Feb. 1997 to work for Advantech USA selling computer hardware.  His positive outlook, integrity, engaging personality, perseverance and competitive spirit made him a natural salesman and he excelled at Advantech, becoming one of the top earners in the Embedded Computing Group.

Richard was a dedicated, honest, hard-working professional and a devoted family man. He enjoyed being active, whether biking, practicing Hapki Do martial arts, golfing, or playing soccer and baseball with his sons.   A fierce competitor, he loved to “clean up the table” while playing pool or poker with his friends and colleagues. Richard was a stylish dresser and enjoyed architecture, art, music and travel.

Richard leaves behind his loving wife, Julia Radostits, and two beloved sons, Sebastian and Justin; his mother; and sister, Li-Chen Hong (Sammy) and a large Radostits clan in Canada. Richard will be sorely missed by his family and friends.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Be the Match, The Leukemia Lymphoma Society or City of Hope.  A celebration of life will be held at a future date. Special thanks to all the wonderful doctors and nurses at City of Hope and UCI Medical Center for their wonderful care, especially Dr. David Snyder.

  1. Dear Julia, Sebastian and Justin,

We were so sorry to learn of the passing of your husband and father. Richard was such a good person, husband and father. We have such fond memories of the times we shared together, whether it was dinner, a concert or golf.

Richard enjoyed his work and passionately discussed the intricacies of the technology he sold and how it gave him great pleasure to help his customers. He was also very competitive on the golf course, yet would happily help out a struggling golfer with tips and suggestions.

All of that paled in comparison to his true passion — his family. He was so proud of you and loved to share the latest news and successes each of you had in your lives.

He will be missed by everyone he touched.

    Love,
    Tony and Janet DiIulio

  2. Dear Julia, Sebastian and Justin,

We wish we could be with you as you mourn the loss of Richard. He will be truly missed at Radostits family gatherings. His life was cut short, but he achieved much and I know that you will have lots of wonderful memories! He was a hard worker, loved his family very much and I always enjoyed his story-telling – whether it was about his stint in the army in Taiwan, his bike ride, or some beautiful architecture that he had recently admired. He fought his cancer battle hard and was able to watch his beloved sons grow up a bit longer. May he rest in peace. Sending all our love and a big hug.

Im in shock!! i’m just finding out right now that Richard has passed on. My husband George and i lived beside both Julia and Richard in London, Ontario, well over 25 years ago. Even before the boys were born.
Julia’s mom had a cottage at Sauble beach and we had a cottage not far from them. We had the joy of keeping in touch with them for years and visiting when they came to Canada to visit Grandma at Sauble beach.
Last summer, George and I traveled across USA to California to visit Richard and Julia at their house. We bought a used trailer and pulled it many miles but visiting are previous neighbours had to be on our list. Julia and Sebastian cooked us a great meal and we had a lovely visit. I’m thrilled to have a great memory tucked away for ever. I can hear his voice right now. That cute accent that he had. I am truly blown away that he is not with us anymore. It must be terribly hard on you and the kids, Julia. We will keep you in our prayers. Richard is no longer in pain. May God bless you and keep you safe. May you feel his loving arms around you during your sad times. All our love, Kim, George Goor and the girls

  4. I am brokenhearted to have learned Richard has passed. Having met Richard over 25 years ago I consider myself lucky to have known him and been his friend. I’ll always remember his smile and genuine laugh. He was a proud man who seemed happiest when talking about Julia and his sons. He was to me the best. Always in my thoughts. Rest in Peace my friend.

  5. Richard was a great person and will be missed. When he was feeling better, he was a regular in our biking group and was always up for the challenge and fun to be around. He was also a good poker player and cleaned us out a couple times…Prayers to the family during this difficult time.
