Dear family of Sergeant Major Ray Fitzhugh,
Please know that “Gunny Fitzhugh” was my Platoon Commander–my Senior Drill Instructor–in boot camp in September 1968. To my surprise and delight, he and I attended the same high school: John Muir High. I graduated from Muir in 1965, and attended Pasadena City College for three years before joining the Corps. (I lived at 1854 N. Los Robles Avenue in Pasadena.)
Gunny Fitzhugh was glad that I could outrun everyone in our near-daily three-mile runs. Not only did I letter varsity is cross country track at Muir, but I continued running a lot on my own afterwards.
I found the Sergeant Major’s address in our John Muir Directory in 2000, and thereafter would correspond with him occasionally. He told me he was glad that I was still doing youth work, with abused kids at Camp Julian Oaks, in Julian, California.
We also attended the same Boys’ Club in Pasadena, but, of course, not at the same time.
I will miss you, Gunny Fitzhugh. If you, the family, and others, would like to see our 1968 Boot Camp group photo, go to the Internet, and type in USMC BOOT CAMP GROUP PHOTOS 1968 SAN DIEGO. You will see us in the Platoon with the guidon that reads Platoon 3081 1968. Gunny Fitzhugh is the Drill Instructor in the center. I am the Private wearing all green, and not smiling. I am in the Fourth Row Down, and Tenth from the left.
May our Lord Jesus bless all of you…
