Obituary

Melinda Wayne Munoz

Melinda Wayne Munoz, born December 3,1940, passed away April 13, 2022, after outliving the standard longevity of the lung transplant she received 11 years ago.  She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and a good friend. The fourth of John Wayne’s seven children and Josephine Saenz’s youngest child, Melinda married Gregory Munoz in 1964. They were married 21 years and raised five children. She especially prided herself on being a fun grandmother to 14 grandchildren who will always remember her creative gift-wrapping, incredible poker playing,  as well as her incredible ability to make them laugh.

Melinda attended Immaculate Heart High School and studied at the University of Madrid. She was a true force of life who loved travel, reading, and films. In her spare time, she did volunteer work for many organizations, including St. Anne’s Home, and served as a Teacher for Natural Family Planning.  She also was a valiant and passionate advocate in the fight against cancer through the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. A faithful, active Catholic, Melinda served as a Dame of Malta. Throughout her life, Melinda was known for being humorous, enthusiastic about her beautiful children and grandchildren, and full of love for life.
