Obituary

Marguerite “Peggy” Ann Nan
July 6, 1933 – April 1, 2023

Marguerite Ann Garry was born on July 6, 1933 to parents William and Catherine Garry of San Francisco. Both parents immigrated to the United States from their native Ireland. Marguerite, fondly known as Peggy to her family and Marge to friends, joined her older sister Kathleen and grew up in her favorite city by the Bay. After graduating from St. Cecilia’s Grammar School, Marguerite attended St. Vincent’s High School where she graduated in 1950. After high school she enrolled at Heald Business College and earned an associate degree. This led her to taking a job at Pacific Telephone Company. There, employed as a directory assistance operator, she met the love of her life, Louis Nan. The couple were married in April of 1959 and settled in their hometown in the Outer Mission-Excelsior District. In 1961, their son Charles “Chuck” Gerard Nan was born. Enjoying life as a housewife and raising baby “Charlie,” Marge took up the hobby of bowling in 1963. From there she could be found every Tuesday and Thursday at the popular city alleys: Westlake Bowl, Serra Bowl and L&L Castle Lanes for the next 20-plus years. Marge was an excellent cook and learned to prepare some of the tastiest Italian dishes from her mother-in-law Giuseppina. Her and Lou enjoyed weekend parties with friends and family and vacationing each summer in Guerneville near the Russian River. Marge was a great servant to others and volunteered to be part of many activities at Chuck’s schools. Shortly after Chuck graduated from college in 1983, Louis was diagnosed with cancer, and after a gallant fight, passed away in May, 1986. It was after this that Marge continued another 20-plus years of selfless dedicated service. She tended to her parents’ health needs until they passed on in the late 1980s/early 1990s. From there, she immersed herself in many clubs and organizations associated with the Catholic Church in San Francisco. She also met and cared for her close friend Tosca Mitchell and the two were virtually inseparable for 10-years until Tosca’s passing. The pair would often be seen at the ballpark watching their favorite team, the San Francisco Giants. After this, Marge began to develop some health challenges that would continue to impact her. In 2008, she moved in with her son Chuck and his loving, caring wife Holly. In 2014, the family made a decision to relocate to Orange County, Holly’s original hometown. With her health declining, Marge enjoyed spending time with her son and daughter-in-law and their dogs Ellie and Katie. In 2020, Marge moved to assisted living and then ultimately a board and care home. The folks at Granny’s Place were superb in their care for her and gave her family comfort knowing she was safe. Her family would like to thank the ownership and staff at Granny’s Place for their support. This includes: Ron, Del, Anna, Norma, Kyle and Annie. Alliance Hospice provided constant hands-on support over the last four-plus months of Marge’s life. Marge will be entombed at the Italian Cemetery in Colma with her husband Louis. She is survived by her son Chuck, daughter-in-law Holly and nieces Eileen Scrodin, Theresa Scrodin and nephew Daniel Scrodin.
