Obituary

Kenneth “Ken” Ray Martinez
1945-2015

Ken Martinez, 70, passed away on Wednesday October 14, 2015 in La Jolla, CA at Thornton Hospital surrounded by family.

He graduated from Point Loma High School with the class of 1963 where he lettered in Football and Baseball. As a standout athlete, he went on to play both sports at San Diego City College. In 1966 he married Patti, the love of his life, bought a small Spanish style house in Point Loma and began working at Kettenberg Marine. Finding his true calling as a salesman in the Furniture and Industrial Coating Industry with Frazee Paints, he brought his family to Lake Forest to pursue his career. He worked with several companies throughout his lifetime perfecting the ever changing coating technology and bringing it into Los Angeles and Orange County and eventually to Riverside and across the border into Mexico. Ken was always a leader in his territory, working hands on to train staff in spray technique and salesmanship until the day he retired. When the workday was done he could be found on the baseball field playing, coaching, watching or maybe just tossing a little BP. He loved his family, ocean fishing, his yard and his plumerias and the USC Trojans.

Ken is survived by his wife, Patti of 49 years; their daughter Ann Marie (Jeff) Wine and son Dr. Kenneth Martinez; two grandchildren, Tim Harvey and Kaiden Martinez; sister Alfreda “Fredi” Martinez; and many loving nieces, nephews and extended family. Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

  1. The Franklin’s send their thoughts and prayers to the Martinez’s. Know that you ALL are in our hearts during such a huge loss. We all loved Kenny, not only for his kindness, wisdom, but also his intellect. We know his wonderfulness will continue with his tremendous children and grandchildren. We feel so fortunate to have know your family and value all that you have given to us. Kenny was truly a wonderful neighbor and friend; we will miss him, but feel so lucky to have known him. Our hearts are with you.

My Friend, I miss you and I know your family is well, but also missing you. You were part of my life, beginning at a time when all of us had to decide what moral and ethical fabrics were going to guide our lives and comprise who we were. There is a group of us we were a part of, comprised of others like you and I. All of us made these choices and it is my opinion, the reason we all remained friends for the rest of our lives. It is my guess, all of us loved each other and it is this love by these men that will surpass this world.
Are you opening doors for people in heaven? You and I will be doing this for eternity. We took pride in doing this when no one was there to see it. You taught me it was good to do this for all the people we loved. You felt this small thing would help other people to prosper as well. I will see you all too soon and we’ll do a little fishing. I think God will let us catch one of his fish. Or if Len’s around, perhaps he could pull up another monster lobster. Curt and Steve are still riding bikes every day and I’m concerned they will get lost. Maybe Steve carries one of those giant compasses from the Conquistador. Bobby is playing golf, surprise????? They’re more guys out here and they all miss our friend. Most of them will be there to bid you goodbye Saturday. I have a huge number of E mails from some who can’t make it. I promise we will toast you a number of times. And if Doug doesn’t bring the wine, we’ll buy the place out. You also know, without doubt, all of these knuckle heads, especially myself, will be here for anyone in your family. But you know this. In the end Ken, each day, all of us find new tears when our hearts try to reach out to you.
I and all of us miss you our friend. See you soon.

  4. Patty, Ann, Dr. Ken, and Fredi, I am so sorry to hear about my cousin Kenny. He was always a smile when we would get together with Familia when we were all young. Did not see him much as we grew older, Auntie Mae and Fredi always kept us up on his wonderful life and family. Take care, sending prayers and love. Rufina Herman
