Obituary
Kang Lee Tjhio passed away peacefully on August 1, 2016 at the age of 74 due to pulmonary fibrosis.
He is survived by his son David (wife Julie) and daughter Claudine Ward (husband Patrick); brother Ben (wife Jayne); and sister Derry.
Lee was born in Indonesia and became a civil engineer. His profession brought him to Germany, Canada, and eventually the U.S. where he settled in Chicago and raised his family. In Chicago, he quickly connected with others from Indonesia which helped him to form long-lasting friendships and a tight-knit community with others from his birthplace.
After 25 years of enduring Chicago winters, he headed west for sunny California where he made his home in Irvine. He worked for several years before retiring and finding his next calling as a Lakeview Senior Center volunteer in Irvine. At the Senior Center, he was an integral part of many of their services including senior outreach, the computer lab, and aerobics classes. He also enjoyed playing tennis and ping pong, tracking the stock market, and bantering with friends. His magnetic and mischievous personality helped him to quickly find love, friendship, and fulfillment that would take him through the remainder of his life.
Lee’s ‘Celebration of Life’ Memorial Service will take place at 11 AM on Saturday, August 27th at the Lakeview Senior Center. Address is 20 Lake Rd, Irvine, CA.
For those wishing to make donations in Lee’s honor, please send to ‘City of Irvine–Senior Services.’ Mailing address is Lakeview Senior Center, 20 Lake Road, Irvine, CA 92604. We are planning to create a Lakeview Senior Center ice cream parlor in honor of Lee (he loved his ice-cream!) so please add, ‘Lee Tjhio’s Ice Cream Parlor Fund,’ in the memo section of your checks.
We are planning to have an additional ‘Celebration of Life’ Memorial Service for Lee in the Chicago-land area. It is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, October 2nd. Details forthcoming.

I played tennis with Lee for many years and always enjoyed his company. He visited in my home in Tustin several times with other players. We will certainly miss him.
