Obituary

Gail Ivy Comstock Oakley passed away peacefully on December 8th, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her husband, family, and caring staff at the Providence Mission Hospital in Orange County, California.

She was born on June 8th, 1948 in Herkimer, New York, daughter of the late Bart and Joan Comstock. She attended school in Herkimer, NY and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She then moved to California to work as a buyer for a large department store and later moved into facilities management for multiple companies.

She met her husband, Richard Oakley, in 1994, and they recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Together they loved to ski, travel and were involved in the Trabuco Presbyterian Church.

Gail stayed active through long-distance walking, completing several half-marathons, loved to cook and was always trying new recipes.

Gail is survived lovingly remembered by her husband Richard Oakley of Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, step-daughter Brooke Oakley Cherven (Chris) of Decatur, GA and two young grandchildren, Keegan James and Emily Oakley Cherven; her sister Lynn Comstock Barnhart (Chris) of Seattle, WA and four nieces and nephews Shauna Lockhart (Cody), of Jackson, Wyoming, Peter Walchenbach (Stephanie), Trevor Walchenbach, and Ava Barnhart of Seattle, WA, one great-niece, Amelia and two great-nephews, Callahan and Bode.

In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to the Leonard Cancer Institute at Providence Mission Hospital Foundation or the American Cancer Society.

This is so sad. I was a classmate of Gail’s. She was beautiful inside and out. My heart is very sad but knowing she no longer suffers will give some comfort. Peace and love to you and your family.

  5. Gail’s life was a celebration of living courageously and to the fullest, in spite of all the circumstances. She was a bright light and I will always remember her that way. She was much loved and will be much missed but I am so thankful to have known her. Love and prayers to her family.
