Obituary

Cynthia Bobruk, Executive Director and President of the Orange Catholic Foundation passed away on April 26th, 2019. Cindy led the development staff and was responsible for the leadership and operations of the Foundation supporting all aspects of Catholic life in Orange County, California.

The Orange Catholic Foundation (OCF) and Mrs. Bobruk, under the leadership of the OCF Board of Directors and in collaboration with the Most Reverend Kevin Vann, Bishop of Orange worked tirelessly on the renovation of the 35-acre Christ Cathedral (formerly Crystal Cathedral) campus in Garden Grove. Her efforts also served to grow the tuition assistance endowment for students at Catholic elementary schools, an endowment for the needs of retired diocesan priests, support of the 62 parishes and centers in the diocese and provide resources for vital pastoral ministries including Catholic Charities of Orange County.

Cindy worked in nonprofit advancement for more than 30 years. She began her career in the nonprofit sector as a development director for the University of California – Irvine and a director of advancement for St. Margaret’s Episcopal School and the J.F. Shea Therapeutic Riding Center in San Juan Capistrano.

Her extraordinary leadership, exceptional ethical standards and devotion to her Catholic faith were evident in the many successful philanthropic initiatives she led. Cindy will be missed as a professional, a colleague and a friend.

Despite her hectic schedule, family and friends were Cindy’s passion and delight. She enjoyed horseback riding, watching baseball games and was often found at her sons’ sporting events with the love of her life, Jonathan Bobruk. Cindy and Jonathan married 28 years ago in Dana Point. Shortly after, they moved to Ladera Ranch and raised their two sons, Jack and Luke.

Cindy is survived by her husband and two sons and several loving relatives and close friends. She and her family are founding parishioners of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Ladera Ranch, California.

The Board of the Orange Catholic Foundation established the Cynthia Bobruk Operations Endowment Fund in her honor. Memorial gifts may be made at www.OrangeCatholicFoundation.org/Cindy.

A separate family fund was established to assist the family during these difficult times. Donors can give online through PayPal at this link: https://paypal.me/pools/c/8dYZK5UxGI

  1. All of us at Saint Anne School are so sorry to hear of Cindy’s passing. Cindy was such a beautiful person who gave much of herself to those in need, and our students were the recipients of her generous goodness. You are in our thoughts and prayer and we will miss Cindy greatly. I will especially miss her kindness and thoughtfulness.

The School of Our Lady Community is very saddened to hear of Cindy’s passing. Her love of Catholic Education was a big part of who she was and we all loved her for that. A few years ago at the Marian Alliance Donor Breakfast she was made an honorary Madrina by our own Madrinas. She proudly wore her shirt that day. May God give her family strength during this difficult time of grief.

Upon hearing that Cindy Bobruk passed through this life into the wondrous beauty of life everlasting I felt simultaneous joy and sadness. She had suffered long enough. In fact, far too long. So too had those who deeply loved her, especially Jonathan, her husband, and Jack and Luke, her two sons.

For those of us who worked with Cindy, it was bittersweet. Since learning of her cancer on November 15, 2017 to her final month, Cindy continued to work with us, rarely skipping a beat. She never gave up or gave in. The cancer and many rounds of chemotherapy barely slowed her down. Neither did it take away her razor sharp edge for running the Orange Catholic Foundation (OCF).

When I first looked at the years, 1960-2019, in her obituary I thought of that poem in which the dash represented all the time she spent alive and how now only those who loved her know its worth. If that is true, I want to share a small portion of her worth to the Diocese of Orange. In my estimate it is an amazing legacy.

Cindy joined the Orange Catholic Foundation (OCF) in 2010. At that time the foundation had little to no name or brand recognition and its primary value was managing the Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA).

Within her first year, Cindy orchestrated the diocese’s first-ever capital campaign, For Christ Forever, engaging the support of all 62 parishes and more than 25,000 families. That campaign ultimately raised more than $120 million that today provides financial assistance to our Catholic schools, local parishes, priest retirement, diocesan ministries, and the transformation of Crystal Cathedral into Christ Cathedral.

Cindy directed the launch of what I believe will be the source of continued financial sustainability in our diocese, Wills and Trusts Week. Since the first Wills and Trusts Week in the fall of 2011, the Orange Catholic Foundation has helped more than 6,000 people understand the importance of an estate plan in protecting and providing for loved ones. As an adjunct to these seminars she guided the development of the Light of Christ Legacy Society that was established to recognize and thank supporters of the Diocese of Orange who provide for the long-range financial stability of our Catholic parishes, schools, and ministries of our local Church of Orange.

Making Catholic education accessible, available and affordable to all families willing to pay according to their means was near to Cindy’s heart. Over the years, she helped grow the Conference on Business & Ethics (CBE) from a reasonably sized breakfast to the #1 non-profit breakfast event in Orange County generating an annual net profit north of $500,000 each year. That breakfast alone now provides financial support for approximately 300 students each year. My best guess would be that during her years of leadership, the CBE provided financial support to nearly 2,000 students.

Under Cindy’s leadership and during the period of 2011 to 2018, endowment and special interest funds grew in number from 28 to 93 and in value from $12 million to nearly $40 million.

These are but a few of the tangible markers left behind that benefit many. For those who worked directly with Cindy, it was the virtues of faith, hope and love that she helped permeate the organization at all levels; board of directors, staff, donors and even many of our vendors. We will remember her for these as she ensured they were integral in our everyday work lives.

Although Cindy’s life was abbreviated by cancer, her “dash” will always represent the value she created and a lasting legacy left for all of us to remember.
