Obituary

Catherine Jeanne Hauck, 66, of Mission Viejo, loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and dear friend to many, passed away Sunday, March 1st. She took great joy in spending time with her adult children, grandkids, great-grandson, nieces, nephews and cousins. Her many dear friends were very special to her. She especially enjoyed playing with babies, and the babies always seemed to enjoy it, too.

Jeanne was born in Creston, Iowa, daughter of Wayne and Regina Rouh. She was the youngest of 4 children. Her family moved to Long Beach, CA in the early fifties. There she attended school at Garfield Elementary School, Stephens Junior High School, and graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School.

Jeanne was very creative in crafts: sewing, glass overlay and decorating. It was often said that if you stood still for too long, she would decorate you. She loved to come up with new ideas for decorating the house for different holidays, with Christmas being her favorite. She had her own power tools for cutting out wood patterns and designs. Her skills for sewing stuffed animals and dolls were shared by the many family members and friends that she often gave her creations to. This past Christmas, the theme was ‘ugly sweater’ design. She took great joy in making sweaters for her and her husband. They were truly one of a kind and were shared by all. The sweaters brought smiles to everyone there.

Jeanne was a fun loving gal. Her many friends always enjoyed being around her. Although really kinda shy, she always had a good time at gatherings for family and friends and was often the life of the party. It was important to her that others there also enjoyed themselves. She would always see to it that everyone was comfortable and that no one was neglected.

Jeanne was pretty good at most outdoor activities, including basketball. She often beat her husband at horse. He would claim that he had a sore shoulder. She also enjoyed playing softball and football.

Water sports she excelled at, particularly water skiing. She was certainly one of the better skiers among her family and friends. And she had a competitive nature to her. A family friend, a man, once remarked that she couldn’t beat him at ping-pong because she was a girl. Jeanne practiced daily for 3 months. The next time that guy came over, she called him out. Jeanne not only beat him, but she trash-talked him the whole time until he left in a huff.

Jeanne is survived by her husband of 47 years, Kenneth, her daughter Jodie Bagshaw (Joseph), her son Donald Hauck (Tracey), her sister Janet Swadener, her grand-daughters Ashley Gunckel, Sarah Love (Trevor), Abigail Whitener, Kelly Bagshaw, Josie Bagshaw, grandson Jason Gunckel, great-grandson Jay Love and many nieces and nephews, family and friends.

Jeanne was proceeded in death by her son Jason Hauck, her parents and her brothers Gary Rouh and Michael Rouh.

Memorial Services will be held at O’Connor Mortuary, Saturday, March 14th at 4pm followed by a gathering at the Hauck house.

A tribute program has been set up with Jeanne’s favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Donations may be made, in her name, with the following information:

  4. Mom taught me my ABCs and 123s. She taught me to read, how to dress myself, & helped with homework. Mom taught me to be a kind and loving person. Mom always kept a perfectly clean & organized home, took care of us kids, took care of Dad, prepared all of our meals, sewed, did her crafts, landscaped, & still did volunteer work. (She volunteered at my preschool & our elementary school. She continued to volunteer with Barcelona Hills throughout the years.) I remember, growing up, people used to refer to Mom as “Susie Homemaker”. Mom put Susie Homemaker to shame!

Mom loved to cook & bake. She taught me to cook & how to have fun designing & decorating cakes. She was known as “the cake lady” in our extended families. Mom always made the cakes for birthday parties & for holidays. She was very creative & got excited when her newest experiment turned out.

Mom taught me the things I needed to learn to get through life, do well in school, make sure that our outfits matched perfectly, & to treat others with respect & dignity, but she also taught us some fun stuff. Mom could sew just about anything, & she taught me to sew & embroider at a fairly young age. She loved puzzles & she passed that love along to me. Mom spent hours coloring & painting & drawing with me.

Mom spent a lot of time teaching me how to blow the biggest bubbles possible with bubble gum. Mom also taught me how to whistle through a straw. She could whistle through straws quite loudly, & we’d goad her into doing it in restaurants. She’d blush a bit, look around to see if anyone was watching, then do a doozy of a whistle. People would turn to see who’d made that loud sound, but Mom would just sit there as composed & proper as could be, playing innocent. She was a lot of fun!

Our family was very involved in little league baseball when I was young. Mom was always the team mom and head scorekeeper for Don’s teams & for the teams Dad coached. She taught me to keep score, also, & she taught me to do it her way. Mom was often silly in this & had funny little codes she used that only she & I seemed to understand (such as “SOS” struck out swinging, and “SOL” struck out lookin’). Ma made everything fun!

I have wonderful memories of my childhood, especially summers. Our family often went on waterskiing trips with friends & family. Sometimes we’d vacation for as long as 2 weeks. Mom planned every little detail in advance: what each of us would wear each day (down to socks & matching undies) & what we’d have for each meal of each day. She put a lot of work into ensuring that our vacations would go smoothly so we could all just enjoy ourselves while we were there. Mom was a skilled & elegant skier, as she was with everything she did in life.

Don & I were never allowed to be bored; Mom always found something for us to do. I remember she’d ask us to go search for “perfect rocks” for her; they had to be a certain size & shape. She’d paint cute little frogs, flowers & bunnies on the rocks & put them in her planters. Mom always came up with something fun & new for us to do.

Ma loved being a wife, mother, & grandmother and she became a great-grandmother on Jan. 13th of this year. No one could ever ask for a better or more loving mother than the one that I was blessed with. Thanks, Ma, I love you all the way to the moon and back!
