  3. Fitz, when I first met you, you were a well deserved big-time recruit for the LMU baseball pitching staff. A wiry, yet strong horse on the bump with the whippy arm action any professional scout nowadays would drool over. I was an undersized walk-on who, at that time, really had no business attempting to play at LMU. You encouraged me to keep plugging away. You believed in me. Having you in my corner was everything to me at that time in my life. I liked to sing Meatloaf songs in the racquetball court adjacent to the baseball weight-room in between sets. Most teammates thought this was a little odd but you…you would jump in there with me in a straightforward fashion saying, “I would do anything for love as well Meatloaf. But I won’t do that. Cherry.” You were the guy that when you saw a sign in the road that said, “Dip ahead,” you would pull out your Skoal can and say in your one-of-a-kind manner, “Don’t mind if I doooooooo!” Our zaniness connected us and our friendship endured all the way. When you, your mom and your sister opened your home to me after college graduation, all three of you welcomed me with open arms and that graciousness will never be forgotten. Instead of counting sheep to fall asleep, we would crack each other up by having a contest to see who could make the most ridiculous sentence that had ever been uttered. I think you won most of those contests. I remember you once saying, “Rump roasts and typewriters will fall off the earth, if you let them. Cherbd.” Well played, Fitzie. Well played. Dave Sharrer, Mark Veronda and I were all so enamored with you that when we were looking for a band name in 1996, we initially chose “Erbd” in honor of your constant “what erbd” saying. We ended up changing the name because we tired of having to explain your greatness to everyone that asked what the band name meant. Shame on us. You went on to show your greatness in your professional life. And most importantly, I saw you change into the family man you were always destined to become. To Emery, Ireland, Jan, Erin, Harry and all family members, I offer my most heartfelt condolences. Although I too am devastated that I will no longer share a conversation, text message or that hilarious wayward glance with you, I will always remember the good times we had. I love you. You will never be forgotten.
