Homer “Red” Voorhest
Born May 1, 1921 in Mineola, New York, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2012 in Tustin, California. Preceded in death by his daughter Sandra and his beloved wife of 61 years, Isabelle.
Following high school, Red worked at Pan American Airlines until the outbreak of WWII. A proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, Red served from 1942 thru 1945, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. He was involved in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the bombing of Iwo Jima. He was a pilot for Bombing Squadron 15 attached to the USS Essex and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, two Air Medals, Bronze Star, Gold Star and shared the Unit Citation given to the men of the Essex.
Red went to high school with his future wife, Isabelle Walsh in Oyster Bay, New York and they were married in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1944 before Red was reassigned to the South Pacific.
Following the war he worked in the experimental aircraft division for Republic Aviation in Long Island, New York, eventually relocating with his family to Anaheim, California where he worked for Fairchild Industrial Products and other companies in the optics field.
Red retired in 1981 and enjoyed working in wood and playing golf. He is survived by his brother David, daughters, Carol and Nancy, and son, Gary. Services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 26 at O’Connor Chapel in Laguna Hills.
