Making Sense of Grief: The New Prolonged Grief Disorder and What We Know about Bereavement
With the announcement of the new diagnostic criteria for Prolonged Grief Disorder in the last couple of months, caregiving professionals will increasingly encounter individuals who have been “diagnosed” with “problem grief.” Some of these individuals have been properly assessed and many of them have not been. In this workshop, we’ll overview current understandings of bereavement and how the new diagnostic criteria potentially helps—and hurts—with the work we do with bereaved individuals and families.
Objectives. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to…
- Describe contemporary models for understanding the bereavement process
- Utilize counseling and support strategies to help minimize the effects of complex losses
- Apply current understandings of the assessment and treatment of Prolonged Grief Disorder
