Obituary
Wyatt Tipton Hart
October 30, 1936 – February 3, 2026
San Juan Capistrano, CA
Wyatt Hart passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on the morning of February 3, 2026. Born in Crane, Texas, Wyatt was raised in Duncan, Oklahoma. At the age of 17 he joined the United States Marine Corps and was deployed to Korea in 1953. After being wounded Wyatt returned to the United States where he was honorably discharged in 1955. Following his military service Wyatt entered the oil industry as a roughneck where he ended up moving to Lompoc, California in the early 1960s. It was there that Wyatt began his 30 year career in law enforcement, later transferring to the Orange County Sheriffs’ Department in 1968. Wyatt rose to the rank of Captain and had the honor of serving as the department’s first Press Information Officer, ultimately retiring in 1988 as the head of the Men’s Central Jail.
Wyatt continued to pursue careers and interests that served the community. He was a Security Consultant at John Wayne Airport, served as District Director for Congressman Ron Packard of the 48th District of California, served as a member of the city council of San Juan Capistrano, which included three terms as the city’s mayor, served on the state juvenile parole board, and was an assistant high school football coach at St. Margaret’s, Santa Margarita and San Juan Hills. Wyatt took great pride and was instrumental in securing federal funding for the new site of the Boys and Girls Club in San Juan Capistrano.
Wyatt was a cowboy at heart and always enjoyed and appreciated the western lifestyle. He celebrated this passion through his committed 43-year membership with El Viaje de Portola and Los Rancheros Vistadores. You could often find Wyatt enjoying time with family and friends at the El Adobe Restaurant, Swallows Inn, and other local establishments.
Throughout his nearly 90 years Wyatt positively impacted everyone that came in contact with him and was considered a father figure by many.
Wyatt is survived by his wife Sue, sons Todd (Polita), Ryan (Erika), and Greg (Donna) and grandchildren Christina and Mitchell, and other extended family.
Wyatt will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him, and the world will be a little less bright without him. Our family takes comfort knowing he will join his beloved grandson Steven in Heaven.
Semper Fidelis Wyatt. Via Con Dios and Happy Trails.

Wyatt was one of a kind. I worked at the Sheriff’s Department as a deputy while he was there. I remember him most as our PIO. I got to know him better when he was the Mayor and on City Council in San Juan Capistrano,, when I was the city’s Chief of Police Services. He was a great mentor and friend. He took very good care of me.. I loved that big Wyatt smile and laugh. I was so sad to hear of his passing. The world will not be the same without him. My thoughts and condolences go out to Sue and their whole family.

I first met Wyatt when he was the Mayor and asked me to come to San Juan as the new City Manager. That was over 20 years ago and we’re still here. Wyatt served the community in so many ways that most never knew about. He was certainly a big factor in getting JSerra high school to locate in town. He became a trusted friend, always asking about my family whenever we’d meet. I don’t know of any other man who was more proud of his wife and family than he was. We’ve lost a great man and leader. Praying for Sue and the family. Dave Adams
