Vincent William Mattero Sr. passed away on September 22, 2026, at his home in Mission Viejo, California, at the age of 88, with family by his side.
He was born in Superior, Wisconsin, on January 1, 1938, to Thomas and Katherine Mattero and had four brothers: James, Thomas, Gerald, and Michael. After graduating from Central High School in Superior, Wisconsin, Vincent joined the Army and was stationed in Greenland. After being discharged from the Army, Vincent moved from Wisconsin to Southern California, where he would reside indefinitely. In fact, the house that he purchased brand new in 1970 with his wife, Wanda, is where they would raise their three kids, Vincent Jr., Kristina, and Brian, and would end up being his forever home.
Vincent worked in the automotive business his entire life, starting as a parts driver in Wisconsin, assistant parts manager for Bob Black Oldsmobile in Santa Ana, parts manager for Allen Cadillac in Laguna Niguel for 25 years, and retiring from Tustin Buick in the early 2000s.
Vincent loved to be outdoors. After work or on the weekends, you would always find him working around the house, in the yard, or lounging in the pool. He loved fishing on his boat at Lake Mission Viejo (in his younger years), camping in his RV (after retirement), and spending time with his family. He was always willing to help out family, friends, and neighbors when needed. He was a regular Mr. Fix-It (with the most organized garage and toolbox you have ever seen).
Vincent was an incredible father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, neighbor, and all-around person and will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his children, Vincent Mattero Jr. and Kristina Payan (Ray); grandchildren Tanner Payan (Aubree), Kaitlin Carroll (Alec), Summer Payan, and Zachary Mattero; great-grandchildren Archer Payan, Bowen Carroll, Elowen Carroll, Winafaye Payan, and Coralynn Carroll; his brother Michael Miller (Cindy); and many cousins, nephews, and nieces. And by his beloved dog, Bailey.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Mattero; mother, Katherine Miller; stepfather, Thomas Miller; brothers James, Thomas, and Gerald Mattero; and by his youngest son, Brian Mattero.
