Obituary
Timothy J. Deierling of Laguna Niguel, CA passed away on December 16, 2008, after a courageous 2-year battle with cancer. He was with some of the people who were most meaningful to him, and he was an inspiration to all of us in his fight to survive. Many of us who could not be with him had the opportunity in the last days of his life, to thank him for his great friendship. Tim was born in Hawarden, Iowa on January 26, 1955 to Fred and Dianne Deierling. He spent most of his early years in Carroll, Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1978. Tim’s hard work and dedication to JCPenney led to many significant assignments with the company culminating in appointment as District Manager for all JCPenney stores in the southern half of the Los Angeles area.
All of us who knew Tim well appreciated the timing, appropriateness, and dryness of his sense of humor. Tim was known for his love of the Beatles and their music, BMW’s, and good scotch. He was to the end a fierce fan of the Denver Bronco’s and loved to educate anyone that would listen about the dominance of Iowa Hawkeye wrestling.
Tim is survived by his wife Cathy Holt and her children Kimberlee and Greg; a brother Dave Linda of Ramsey, MN; a brother Bill Marlene of Buena Park, CA; one aunt, Irene Marstrelli of Stillwater, OH; two nieces, Amy Deierling of Minneapolis, MN and Rebecca Deierling of Mandan, ND; and so many great friends, neighbors, and business associates. He was taken from us far too early, but we all will hold his memory in our hearts for the rest of our lives.

Thanks to all of you that have sent condolences and memories of Tim. The thoughts expressed take away a lot of the pain of knowing I will never discuss another Hawkeye win or loss, another Republican triumph or disappointment, or the general state of the JCPenney CO. with Tim. I do not know how I will fill this void in my life.
Tim worked hard at his JCPenney career and he achieved much, however seeing all the posts from former JCPenney partners is the greatest tribute to his work career. Obviously, he was a difference maker with fellow associates.
All of the posts from Tims’ long time Carroll,Iowa friends has brought back a flood of memories from the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies. These were meaningful relationships for nearly all of Tims’ life, and it is gratifying to me to see your names and your remembrances of the guy I knew simply as BUSH. All of you helped to shape Tims’ life.
The Deierling family, Tims’ wife Cathy, and her family want thank all of you for your support and comfort. In the two years that Tim fought his battle to live, his great friends in the neighborhood, all of Cathys’ long time friends, and local JCPenney associates made this ordeal so much easier for all of us to to endure.

I worked with Tim at JCP back in the late eighties in Colorado Springs. He was my favorite and most respected manager there. He had a great sense of humor, was great fun, and also very supportive of me and my goals. When he left the Spring store for bigger things, I really missed him. My prayers and thoughts are with his family.

Where in the world do I start? I ask him how will I know if something happens to you, I guess Google is the answer, sadly.
It was really touching to read all of the entries from old Carroll friends and JCP buddies. “Uncle Willie” and Royce from our Colorado Springs days where I got on the “JC Penney tour of the West” bus with Tim. Denver, Frisco,TX, Cheyenne, Redding and Albuquerque in 11 years picking up Bogey and Max, the black furry kids, along the way. I wouldn’t have missed any of it for the world Tim!
I have like many have said before me learned so much from you about life and finances and music of course! I don’t know his favorite Beatles song but his pick for all time best rock song was “Hush” or at least that was his opinion a few years back.
Love to you Dave and Linda, and your girls. My deepest condolences to you Cathy and your family.
