Obituary

The family of Thomas MacKoul of Mission Viejo, Calif., is saddened to announce his unexpected passing on Thursday, Sept. 22. He was 71 years old.

Tom is survived by his wife of 49 years, Carol; daughter Mary (Gustafson) and her husband, Doug; grandson Luke (Gustafson); son Tommy; brother Richard MacKoul of Grafton, Mass., sister Paula (Cofman) and her husband Mark of Hull, Mass; sister-in-law Jamie MacKoul of Worcester, Mass; and six nieces and nephews.Tom was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Maria MacKoul, brothers Nicholas and Mark.

Born in Worcester on June 25, 1951, Tom grew up with four siblings in a loving home with plenty of food on the table and with a huge yard that served as a haven for family and friends to engage in some of the most highly spirited and competitive athletic events in the neighborhood. Football and baseball generally took center stage.

Tom attended Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester, where he was a star quarterback and pitcher. He went on to play quarterback while attending Worcester State College. Following his college years, Tom began a business career in Massachusetts in the mortgage industry. Through drive, determination and a strong work ethic, he landed a job in the finance industry in California, settling in Mission Viejo, with his wife, Carol. Some 42 years later, they somehow never lost their Boston accents, a source of great enjoyment and good-natured fun with friends and family. And Tom was a person who loved to laugh, and who loved to make those around him smile and feel at home. Most important to him was his family, and being actively involved in their lives. As a husband, as a brother, as a father, Tom always gave his best to be strong and supportive.

His family would get together every weekend at their Mission Viejo home, watching sports and playing cards together. Tom loved animals and was often found taking his daughter’s dogs, Daisy and Scooter, for walks. And though he lived thousands of miles away from some of his close relatives, he made sure to keep in contact with them regularly.

Tom was known for his positive energy, sense of humor, and generosity. You couldn’t help but feel better about yourself when spending time with him.

After retirement, Tom was able to revisit one of his favorite passions: golf. He had a group of golfing buddies that he enjoyed playing with each and every Wednesday. Tom also took over the cooking duties at home. Food was one of his true passions and he thoroughly enjoyed watching his family indulge in his favorite dishes and desserts.

Tom touched many lives with his loving nature, and with his strong desire to make life easier for those around him. He was always there for you, someone who could be relied upon no matter the circumstances. He was adored by family and friends, and his passing has, and will continue to have a major impact on the lives of those he leaves behind. Ultimately, though, Tom should be remembered for how he lived his life, and how during his time here he enriched the lives of so many others.

I knew Tommy when we played Little League and when he attended WPI with me before transferring to Worcester State. I especially remember the times when his father would pick us up and take us to practice baseball. Tom was a wonderful guy with a great family.
