Obituary

Dr. Thomas Koumas, 85, of Dana Point, California, passed away on April 13, 2014 in Mission Viejo, California.

Dr. Koumas was born in Donora, Pennsylvania to John and Despina Koumas on May 11, 1928. When he was young he was active in the Church and was an altar boy at St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Monesson, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and served as a Navy Corpsman. It was during his time in the Navy that he was assigned to duty in Greece as an interpreter. It was there that he met his future wife Annita.

Thomas and Annita married on January 4, 1948 in New York City, New York. As newlyweds they lived in Bethesda, Maryland until Thomas was honorably discharged from the Navy. For a short time after their marriage they lived in Chicago, Illinois where Thomas studied engineering. They soon moved to Los Angeles where Thomas studied at the University of California, Los Angeles. He went on to obtain a degree in Medicine from the California College of Osteopathic Medicine, later to become the School of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Koumas practiced Family Medicine for many years both in the San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County in Baldwin Park and West Covina as well as in the city of Lake Forest in Orange County. He was joined in his medical practice by his two children John and Mary.

After his retirement from active medical practice he enjoyed other pursuits such as spending more time with Annita and showing their Papillon dogs. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren Katie, Christina, Andrew and Noah.

Dr. Koumas had a quick wit and always enjoyed making a good joke. He also loved giving gifts to those that he cared about. However, his gifts of love, warmth and compassion were the greatest of all. He will be missed.

Dr. Koumas is survived by his children John Koumas and Mary Koumas – Lubarsky as well as his grandchildren Katie, Christina, Andrew and Noah.
