Suzanne
Nash
May 3, 1929 – May 26, 2023
Suzanne Davis Nash passed away on May 26, 2023, at the age of 94. She is survived by her brother John R. Davis and family, daughter Karla Tabor, her husband Cliff, grandsons Andrew Tabor, wife Patricia, James Tabor and wife Kelly. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Donna Nash, granddaughter Jill Iverson, great-granddaughter Stella, grandson Steve Nash, wife Kristi, and great-grandsons Hayden and Rory. She is preceded in death by her husband Verl, son David and parents John and Mildred Davis.
Sue was born in Kansas but raised in Ft. Collins, CO where she completed her secondary education and went on to attend Colorado State University where she graduated in 1951, with a degree in Physical Education. Sue was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority while attending college and met her future husband Verl, while attending a fair put on by the Panhellenic Council at the university. They were married on May 30, 1952, and their love story continued for 67 years.
Sue taught school in Colorado, until the arrival of their first child David in 1955. After a two-year hiatus from education, she went back to work in the classroom. In 1960, Sue and Verl had their daughter Karla, and after a year, Sue returned to teaching.
In 1966, the family relocated from Colorado to Shafter, CA where Sue and Verl taught at the high school. Despite majoring in Physical Education, she forged a path as a high school English teacher. As a student, one never knew what her red pen might bring. The corner spot on the couch under the lamp was her office and her family knew not to sit there. Occasionally Elvy, the family's basset hound , would attempt to curl up in her spot, but she was the only one brave enough to do so.
Sue was a fan of all sports. Her father coached college basketball and her husband coached high school basketball for many years. Her son David was an all-around great athlete, and her daughter Karla was a swimmer. Sue was the spotter at the Friday night football games for her announcer husband , Verl. She was the one with the binoculars, giving him the information so he could do play by play. The accurate information she fed him made him the "Voice of the Generals" for over two decades. Verl would sometimes refer to her as "Spot" but only while across the room , well out of her reach!
Sue went back to school in the mid 1970's to obtain her master's degree in counseling. Upon receiving her degree, she was hired at Foothill High School, in Bakersfield where she was a guidance counselor until the end of her 30-year career in secondary education in 1991. She impacted the lives of thousands of students over the years.
Her retirement years were filled with volunteering, playing bridge, traveling in the United States and abroad. She was a voracious reader and spent many hours devouring books. In 2001, Sue and Verl moved to sunny Southern California and settled in Mission Viejo. Sue was a member of the Presbyterian Church of the Master, where she participated in both women's and couples' Bible Study groups. She also volunteered at the Mission Viejo library.
The last three years without Verl by her side and the pandemic wreaking havoc on the world, Sue kept busy by reading and keeping up with her favorite sports teams. Up until April 19, 2023, she was walking upright without the aid of a cane or walker. A broken hip after a fall while walking and the inability for her body to recover led to her passing almost three years to the day Verl passed away. Sue will be missed for her intelligence, her winning smile, and her cunning wit.
A service will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at 10:00 am at O'Connor Mortuary 25301 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Hills, CA 92653. Interment will be later. The service will be live streamed. Please contact a family member for details.
