Obituary

Born in Huntington, WV, Steven attended Marshall University before enlisting in the United States Army, where he served his country as an Intelligence Agent in Vietnam.

After his discharge, Steven’s love of the ocean kept him in Hawaii for years before returning to Marshall and then relocating to the California coast, where he felt most at home.

While Steven enjoyed his 35 year professional career as a construction superintendent, he cherished passing his free time as an artistic painter, playing the guitar, studying music and photography, spending time at the beach, and making new friends. Dear to his heart were his relationship with the Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church, it’s congregation, and his love of God.

Steven loved his son Ian and daughter Rebecca deeply. Time spent with them were the highlights of his years. He was proud of Ian for graduating from Arizona State University, his strong character, and his resiliency. Steven admired Rebecca’s outgoing spirit, her artistic talent, and her love for photography.

In addition to his two children, Steven leaves behind his younger brother Phil (and wife Cathy) who live in the San  Francisco area. He will be missed by his best friend and partner Madelyn Gauchat.

A memorial service for Steven will be held Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church (30071 Ivy Glenn Drive, Laguna Niguel). In lieu of flowers, Steven’s wishes were to be remembered through the Wounded Warriors Project, the American Cancer Society or the Laguna Niguel Presbyterian Church.

  2. My memories of Steve go back to our years in school. We were in Art class together and what grand times we had! He was such a talented artist and nice friend!
Little did Steve and I know that our families would soon become completely intertwined.
Steve’s little brother Phil, and hence, Steve, Nancy and Jack all became a wonderful part of our family when Phil and my little sister Cathy dated through high school and Marshall, (where we all attended together) and then they got married.
Steve knew our children when they were young then he moved to California, fell in love married and had his son, Ian.
Steve is Uncle Steve and I am Aunt Libby to our niece and nephew Caitlin and Trevor Caligan- Morrison.
He is Big Brother to Phil and Cathy.
He is a friend to my husband Terry and I.
I have such wonderful memories of Steve in his youth, he was kindhearted, funny, handsome, bright, talented and so wonderful to be around.
To me he will always be that shining, talented, beautiful 18 year old boy poised on the brink of life.
I am praying for the Blessings of beautiful memories and Peace for all Family and Friends.
Blessings Steve and Rest In Peace.

Rest in Peace Steve. Have fond memories of our work together at Koll Construction in the late 1980’s. Steve had such a tremendous sense of humor mixed with the dedication to his work craft, and became a mentor to those of us just starting out in commercial construction. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.
