Obituary

STEPHEN SCALA, PE, (Steve) of Mission Viejo, CA, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2015. He was 94 years of age. Born and raised in Bayonne, NJ, he later resided in Iselin and Nutley, NJ, for many years before moving to Mission Viejo, CA, in 1986. Loving husband of Rosemary (Nee Gralla), and father of Joan Tipold (Frank), Carol Reilly (Rich), Lori Hetrick and Stephen M. (Lori). Devoted grandfather of Jason, Christopher, Erin, Amanda, Emily and Stephen R., and great-grandfather to Annie and Melanie. He attended Polytechnic University, and was a proud alumnus of Seton Hall University and Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT). He also earned his Professional Engineering License. He was employed for many years by Givaudan Corporation, rising to senior positions in production and safety. He was also an inventor.

He was a gifted man of science and philosophy and a World War II Veteran. Active in the Catholic Church, he served as president of the Holy Name Society. He enjoyed camping and hiking, especially in Florida, Harriman State Park and the Adirondacks in New York State. He loved celebrating any occasion with his family and friends, enjoyed writing and a good discussion, and appreciated the companionship of his dogs, and the beauty of his adopted state of CA.

He was the devoted son of the late Teresa and Salvatore of Bayonne, NJ, and brother to the late Danny, Benny, and Louise. He is survived by family, friends and colleagues on both coasts.

A visitation will be held at the O’Connor Mortuary, 25301 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Hills, CA 92653, on Monday, July 27, from 7 to 9, with the Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, July 28, at 10:30 AM at St. Killian Church, 26872 Estanciero Drive, Mission Viejo, CA 92691, followed by graveside services at Ascension Cemetery, 24754 Trabuco Rd., Lake Forest, CA, 92630.
