Obituary

Shirley Mae Mundy Hodge, Mission Viejo, California, passed away at home with her family on Dec. 9, 2014. She was born to Maurice and Welma Mundy on May 19, 1936 in DeKalb IL.

She graduated from Sycamore High School in 1954. She and Don “Pete” Hodge married in 1958 at St John Lutheran Church in Sycamore and began 56 years of a lifetime partnership, which took them to El Paso, Texas with the US Army, then to Maryland, California, Australia, and back to California due to Pete’s career with Collins Radio and Rockwell International.

She is survived by son David (Amber) Hodge and their children Jordan, Bethany, Gesena, and Annalisa; daughter Gayla (Dan) Babineau and their children Haley and Danielle; daughter Carla (Greg) Thomas and their children Lindsey and Steffan; sister Barbara (Harold) Nordin; brother Ken (Juanita) Mundy; and nieces, nephews and inlaws from Pete’s family. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Gregory Mundy.

Shirley was a classy lady who loved and mentored their Kids and Grandkids. She kept their family close in heart even when separated by many miles. She was a lady of strong faith even while enduring a long illness that ended when God called her Home to be with Him and all believers forever.

The family thanks Pastor Tom who ministered to Shirley and the family during her illness and also the dedicated nurses and doctors who provided medically for her.

Shirley was a dear friend and treasured classmate. I have many fond memories of our fun together and one special one was when she taught me the Scotish at the 8th grade dance. Shirley always had a positive smile that lit up the room. We have been blessed with many memories and those will remain with all of us in the class of 1954. Our prayers will continue for Shirley and her family as they grieve their loss. Bud Trapp

I am saddened to learn of the passing of my classmate, Shirley, and send my sympathies to Pete and all the family. Shirley was that attractive neighbor gal who lived across the tracks and 5 doors down from me when we were young. My prayers have been with the family for many months now during her last days and will continue. May you find peace and comfort that only God can give! …..Roger Maveus

Prayers and blessings to your family in the loss of your wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

I have so many memories of Shirley, and of course of Pete, in our days in the Army at Fort Bliss in ElPaso. We were family while we were there. Shirley was my “sister” and we shared so much about our families, and our future. The many get-to-gethers we had with all of our husbands buddies (and their were lots) and the holidays we shared were so special. I always regretted that we lived so far apart in later years.

I too was diagnosed with Hep C the same time Shirley was and my treatment was successful. We spoke occasionally over the years and I told her that I prayed daily for her recovery.

    Love and Hugs,
    Nonie

There are so many wonderful and funny memories Shirley and I shared.
    1. We were on a ski trip many years ago with our family and Shirley’s. I had not been on a ski lift before and Shirley told me just to watch her get off and follow. Well…she forgot to get off and as the lift turned to go down the kid in the booth stopped the lift and told her to jump. What laughs we shared about that up until a few weeks before she passed.
    2. We went shopping many years ago and decided to buy matching outfits. The funny thing we bought pink print shirts with bloomer pants and had our picture taken in the outfits. It took the picture to make us realize how foolish we looked.
    3. My other memories can be summed up in that Shirley was the kindest, loving, funny, dearest friend anyone could ever have. There will never be another. Rest in peace dear friend.

    Love, Marcie Eden
