Obituary
SHIRLEY INGMAN BROWNE (1929-2016)
Shirley Ingman Browne, 87, of Corona del Mar, passed away on Dec. 13, 2016 in Lake Forest, CA after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born August 13, 1929, in Portland, Oregon. Shirley grew up in Portland and enjoyed clam digging with her family on the coast. She graduated with a B.S. degree from the University of Oregon. She worked as a laboratory technician and phlebotomist before marrying Allen Browne in 1954 and moving to California. Shirley raised 5 children and went back into the workforce and worked for Brea Neuropsychiatric Hospital. Shirley retired in 1991 after 16 dedicated years.
Shirley seldom complained and always remembered to thank everyone for the smallest gesture of kindness. Shirley was an animal lover and had rescued many dogs from animal shelters over the years. Her philanthropic and volunteer activities were numerous. She was an active member in the Junior League, National Charity League, and was the secretary/treasurer of the Alta Bahia chapter of the Orange County Philharmonic Society. Shirley found peace and happiness tending her garden, especially her roses and enjoyed discovering new plants at nurseries & plant shows. She was a member of the Corona del Mar Garden Club. Shirley had a love for hummingbirds. She attracted them through many feeders, and large garden. 100’s of hummingbirds would come to feed daily. She was an accomplished seamstress, needlepoint artist and knitter. She loved to cook and bake the many incredible recipes handed down from her mother. Some of her favorite foods were lamb, Dungeness crab, white chocolate, Abelskivers with lingonberry jam and Haagen-Daz vanilla ice cream.
Shirley will be remembered for her wit, her spirit, her infectious laugh, her selflessness, self-sacrifice, generosity and love. But most of all, Shirley will be remembered for being a loving and devoted mother, making many sacrifices to support her children’s dreams.
She was preceded in death by parents Albin A. & Julia Marie Blackfield Ingman of Portland, Oregon, brother Norman and former husband Allen Browne and dog ‘Talli’ (Golden Retriever mix). She is survived by her 5 children: Frank, Julia, Margaret Day (Jeff), Alice, Bill, her 7 grandchildren: Aubrie, Kelsey and Jessica Day; Megane, Riley, Joshua and Tatum Browne and a great grandchild Gryphon Day.
