Obituary

Shirley Dale Bonner
May 8, 1948 to February 17, 2023

Shirley Dale Bonner, 74, passed away at home in Mission Viejo, California on February 17, 2023, following several years battling Parkinson’s disease.  Shirley had an enthusiastic sense of humor. She nicknamed herself “Parkie.”  From the time she could walk and into her teens, her friends and family called her a tom boy because she liked to play sports.  She was a great athlete and stood up to all the boys in the neighborhood, always giving herself 110%.  She loved all sports but most of all LOVED the game of Golf.  She was born in Gardena California, on May 8th, 1948.  She was the second eldest child to the late Dale and Marjorie Reed. She was a resolute older sister to Jeri Lynn Reed Gilbert and deceased older sister Sandra Ann Reed Klump.  She led by example with her remarkable kindness and loyalty.  Shirley graduated from Gardena High School in 1967 and was 19 years old.

Shirley married Ron Lorey on June 10th, 1967, at age 19.  Together they had a son Eric Dale Lorey. Shirley divorced Ron in 1970. Shirley met Stephin Craig Bonner at her place of work and within five months they married on April 15th, 1972.  They had a beautiful wedding at Stephin’s brother and sister- in-law’s house in Huntington Beach, California, where Keith Bonner and his wife Gloria Bonner lived.  On October 5th, 1973, Shirley gave birth to son Scott Reed Bonner.  Shirley was a proud mother of two boys and people marveled at what a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, niece, aunt and friend she was.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2009 Shirley never let her illness define her and became a source of constant inspiration to loved ones with her positivity, selflessness and unrelenting will to live. She had two Deep Brain Surgeries to help control her Tremors, one in November 2013 and the other in February 2015.  Shirley had many angels on earth throughout her illness. Her family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who helped her along the way including Dr. Marjan Pedarsani, M.D. and Dr. Mindy Kaye Bixby, DO.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Stephin; sons, Scott and Eric; sister, Jeri and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Shirley’s memorial service will be at Laguna Hills Chapel, inside O’Connor Mortuary, Laguna Hills, California, at 10:00 am on March 11th. Jake Stephens will be singing a beautiful song in Shirley’s honor. John Bonner, Pastor of Calvary Chapel in Peru, the brother of Stephin Bonner will deliver Shirley’s Eulogy.  Shirley’s Pall Bearers is, Scott Bonner, Eric Bonner, Jake Stephens, Lydia Stephens, Jeri Gilbert and David Lopez.  Shirley will be taken from the Laguna Hills Chapel to Holy Sepulcher Cemetery arriving at 1:00 pm, to her final resting place.  Shirley will have a beautiful view of the surrounding area which has a conservation area to protect important habitat wildlife and major migration corridors.

At 1:30 pm, there will be a “Celebration of Shirley’s Life” at the Bonner’s home in Mission Viejo, California. The Bonners invite all their family and friends to make their own Pizza, relax in the Spa and tell great stories and share their lives about Shirley.  All this while enjoying Sarah Stephens Famous Won Tons.

My Darling Shirley, how much I miss you.
Your sons Scott and Eric, your sister Jeri and I are getting ready to visit you this Friday evening. You are in God’s hands; I know you are in a better place. You are an Angel, a sweet and kind Angel that will teach the other Angels how to play the game of Golf. I miss playing golf with you even though you always beat me. I was proud how fast you learned the game and how good you became. Do you remember on our 48th Wedding Anniversary I took you to five golf courses in just a few days. Oh, Shirley, how much fun that was. That was the last time you were able to play the game. Parkinson’s started interfering with your beautiful self, making it hard for you to walk, stand and concentrate on hitting that little ball on the beautiful, mowed grass. Shirley, you are always in my thoughts and prayers. I will light a red candle for you tonight. I love you; I miss you.
