Obituary

Sandra “Sandy” Lee Salgado, age 74, born April 14, 1942 in Tucson, Arizona was called home to her Lord and Savior Saturday, November 12, 2016.

Sandy passed away lovingly in her Mission Viejo, California home; surrounded by family and friends (in spirit and presence) of end stage lung disease (IPF) Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.

Sandy’s the only child of deceased parents Marjorie June Weaver and Jack R. Weaver and maternal grandmother Adella C. Geer.

Sandy is survived by her husband (and childhood neighbor) of 50 years Rev. Mr. Fernando “Eddie” Salgado. Eddie studied at St. Johns Seminary in California and was in his discernment year prior to entering the priesthood; Sandy had a car (1964 white Chevy Impala) and he asked for a ride to Tucson. Sandy also was in discernment after declining a marriage proposal from another suitor days before the ride to Tucson. God had other plans for both of them.

Sandy and Eddie married December 18,1965 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Orange, California. Sandy and Eddie are original Mission Viejo homeowners, planted roots and grew a family tree to include 6 children: Eddie Paul Salgado (Sweden/Peru), Lisa (Ray) de Avila (San Clemente, Ca), Christianne (Michael) Tolmaire (Ladera Ranch, Ca), MaryAnn (Joe) Wittmann (Tucson, AZ), Beth (Don) McCann (Sumter, SC), and Daniel Salgado (Mission Viejo, Ca). Excerpts from Sandy’s Autobiography Journal
[Education/ profession]
-I got my BA in Education at University of Arizona in 1962 and then my teaching credential and taught in Tustin California for a number of years. 1969-1972 I began teaching a teacher training class for those who wanted to be religious ed teachers at St. Nicholas run by the diocese of LA. I transferred to St. Edwards and continued this work another 7 years. Then I got my MS in Pastoral Theology from University of San Diego in 1992 while employed with St. Timothy’s and then was certified as a Spiritual Director at Monastery of the Risen Christ in San Luis Obispo.
-San Joaquin Unified, Saddleback Unified, and Immaculate Heart of Mary: 3rd grade teacher
-Director of Religious Ed at St. Edwards
-Teacher Trainer for Diocese of LA
-Director of Adult Ministries and the Director of Faith Formation at St. Timothy’s
-Spiritual Director

[Most Proud of these Career Accomplishments]
-Catholic Woman of the Year 1987 for the Diocese of Orange: I was the first to be chosen for work done with adult ministry.
-Long running (25+ years) Bible Study for women
-Initiated Stay and Pray: Once a month the teams would be “on duty” after every mass to pray with people.
-My long term goal was to have teams after every mass every Sunday.
-10 plus years of monthly women’s breakfast which consisted of breakfast, testimony, prayer, and healing.
-mentoring women to grow in faith

[Family/hobbies: I Love to do these things]
– Playing Cards- Peanuts, Attending the Anaheim Angel Games
– Going on Vacations (not camping!)
– Lake Mission Viejo
– Going to church as a family
– Books! Books! Books! (especially scripture)
– Praying, reading, “lunch bunching”, with my friends
Hopefully I modeled Christ-like behavior and was a good parent. I was fairly patient and open to/with my kids. It was important to me to provide a stable and safe environment. Eddie and I put the whole thing (whether to have children) in God’s hands- trusting him. That trust was a re-decision (6x) to trust all the way thru. I always had to write my mother a letter though because I lacked the courage to to tell her I was pregnant again. She always knew when a letter arrived.
