Samuel Mangione, Ed.D.

Samuel (Sam) died peacefully on December 19, 2023, at his home at age 96. A resident of Laguna Woods Village for the past 21 years, Dr. Mangione was born in Pittston, PA, on August 17, 1927. After serving in the US Army, he completed his Bachelor's degree at the University of Detroit. He started teaching in the Lincoln Park Public School District, Lincoln Park, Michigan, where he eventually was a junior high school administrator and then the district's curriculum coordinator. During those years, he completed graduate studies in education administration, earning a Master's degree from the University of Michigan and a doctorate from Wayne State University. In 1967, he began working for the Wayne County Intermediate School District, now known as the Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency,  as a consultant and program director until he retired in 1990. After retiring, he pursued his passion for music, singing in church choirs for almost 30 years. His wife of 66 years, Rita Mangione, passed away five years ago. He is survived by his children, Peter Mangione, Louis Mangione, Marian Seymour, Carol Mangione, and Rita Mangione- Smith ; nine grandchildren: Allegra Mangione, Asha Ethington, Christina Seymour, Julia Mangione, Kyle Mangione-Smith, Lena Ethington, Michael Seymour, Ryan Mangione-Smith, and Sonya Chaudhry; his daughter-in-law, Margaret (Mimi) Sabo, and son-in-law, William Mangione-Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Covenant House, a non-profit youth homeless shelter in Hollywood that provides sanctuary and support for homeless and trafficked youth. ( https://covenanthousecalifornia.org ; 1325 N Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027.)

A funeral mass in Sam's honor will be celebrated on January 6, 2024 at 10:30AM at St. Nicholas Church, Laguna Woods.
