Obituary

Roy Dale Davenport, 78, of Mission Viejo, California, passed away on August 1, 2020, with his family by his side.  Roy was born on November 30, 1941 in Monrovia, California.  He was the oldest of 4 children.  He attended LeTourneau University in Texas and received his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He then went on to enlist in the US Navy and served on the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War.

While serving our country, he was connected with a 3rd  grade girl from the Bay Area as a pen-pal. This little girl’s mother worked with Carole Olsen and knew the two would get along well and decided to play matchmaker.  When Roy was discharged from the Navy, Roy and Carole were officially dating and were married soon after.  They bought their first home in Mission Viejo and have lived there for 49 years.  Roy and Carole were married for 51 years and have two children, Brian Davenport and Heather Kovacevich, and 5 grandchildren.

Roy had many hobbies and passions including cars, boats, hiking in the mountains, and tinkering with anything he could get his hands on.  This included fixing up cabins over the years in both Arrowbear and Lake Arrowhead in the local San Bernardino Mountains where he and Carole enjoyed many long weekends.  He expressed his Christian faith by being involved in his local church congregation including men’s events and small groups.

In 2011, after noticing a lump on his neck, Roy was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He endured many rounds of chemotherapy, a stem-cell transplant, times of remission and relapse and eventually the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia in 2019.  Everyone was amazed by his tenacity, fighting spirit and positive attitude which he had right until the end.  He also never lost his sense of humor, constantly joking with both family and medical staff.  He will be missed tremendously by his family and friends.

In memory of Roy, flowers can be sent to O’Connor Mortuary at 25301 Alicia Pkwy, Laguna Hills, CA 92653 or in lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

I met Bryan in High School and we quickly became friends. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the Davenport house and cabin on many occasions. One thing I realized about Roy from the beginning was that he was genuinely interested in me and Bryan’s other friends. Many other Dads were intimidating to talk to, but not Roy. He always smiled and made me feel like one of the family. Deepest condolences. – Ryan and family

  2. Roy and Carol; that’s how I remember them both, always together.
Chester and I didn’t get to spend any personal time away from Church with them but our chat’s as we gathered at church each Sunday or at a function was always a joy and delight.
Yes!! I can speak of Roy’s uplifted and positive
attitude whenever we were together, whether the conversation was of general life happenings or going through Chemotherapy.
He seemed to embrace whatever came his way.
His trust in the Lord Jesus was always his foundation and hope.
I will miss his smile and bright eyes as he expressed his views on the conversations as well as his example as a brother in Christ who fought the good fight.
No doubt his entrance home was greeted by the words of our Savior Jesus Christ; “well done good and faithful servant.!!!!”
Roy and Carol’s story in how they met and 51 years of marriage speaks clearly of a love story lived out beautifully, since it’s true foundation in Christ was evident when they were together as they smiled at each other and spoke of each other as one.
We love you Carol and now pray for you as this adjustment unfolds one day at a time.

Chester: Yes, “Always together” is my recollection as well. Yet, Roy and my conversation often moved to the Tech or mechanical areas: Their Classic ‘Wooden Boat’ and Boating Group. Roy promised us a ride as I had given him some special Oil for his 2 Stroke Boat engine from my past shared interests. I too loved Roy’s laughter and radiant smile whenever we met; always eager to engage in spirited conversation. I will miss that!
Carol, you know, Jesus often rode in Wooden Boats – maybe, the 4 of us may just get that ride together; in Heaven!
We continue to pray for and journey with you as you trust Jesus, who will Never Leave You or Forsake You!
