Obituary

Rosario Tanaka, a cherished mother, sister, cousin, “grandma” and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 7, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on April 23, 1945, in the town of Union de Tula, Jalisco, Mexico, Rosario was the beloved daughter of Juan and Julia Martinez. She was predeceased by her parents, her devoted husband, Junior Tanaka, as well as her five brothers Francisco, Refugio, Roberto, Tomas, Joaquin and her sister Maria Nieves Romo. Throughout the years she, for many years, was a caretaker for the family, taking care of her parents and Uncle Tom.

Rosario’s life was a testament to resilience, sacrifice and dedication. After leaving grade school to help support her family, she embarked on a life of hard work and unwavering devotion. She labored tirelessly as a nanny, housekeeper, and farm worker, traveling as a migrant worker in pursuit of better opportunities for her loved ones. Even though she quit school early, she was always eager to learn, never giving up, always looking ahead.

Rosario (called Chayo by her family and friends), is survived by her sons, Jose (Cuco), Tomas (Tommy), Paul, and David, who were the center of her world, as well as brother Jesus Martinez, Sisters Aurora Coronado, Guadalupe Covarrubias, Alicia Farias and countless other cousins, nephews and nieces whom she loved. The legacy of love she left is immeasurable.

She had a great passion for cooking. Friends always knew Mrs. T had something good to eat. If she knew we had a friend or family member that did not have anywhere to go for the holidays, there was always a place for them at her table. Her hearty laugh and radiant smile made everyone feel welcome and valued. She always tended to her garden which included citrus, persimmon, avocado and guava trees. Her”green thumb”, showed her love of flowers. She had beautiful roses. Her tomato plants were big and bountiful, which she eagerly shared, especially in salsas.

Above all, Rosario’s genuine nature and steadfast devotion to family were her defining qualities. You always knew where you stood with her, never beating around the bush, always encouraging others to face their fears head on. Remarkably, always making time for others gave them the feeling of importance, appreciation and understanding.

She would pray the rosary every night... praying for the safety and health of others, speedy recoveries and blessings. Her legacy is one of love, sacrifice, and the enduring strength of family bonds.

Vigil service with rosary will be on Friday, November 13 at 7:00pm in the O'Connor Mortuary Chapel. Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, November 14 at 10:00am at the Mission Basilica in San Juan Capistrano with interment to follow at Ascension Cemetery in Lake Forest at 1:00pm.
