Obituary

Rochee Dean Swendseid

On May 18, 2019, Roc Swendseid passed peacefully surrounded by family at UCSD Medical Center in La Jolla. Roc was born in Langon, ND in October 1944 to Dorothy and C.J. Swendseid and lived in Walhalla until the family moved to Whittier, CA in 1958. On June 15th, 1968 he married his high school sweetheart, Karen Kirkpatrick just after being drafted into military service.

Roc served in the U.S. Army being stationed in Germany until 1970. Upon his discharge Roc and Karen moved to Mission Viejo, CA where they resided until his passing. Roc was a career salesman working in both the home appliance and security fields before retiring in 2010. He enjoyed cooking for his wife, golf and enjoying time with family and his many friends. Roc was love incarnate and made anyone who crossed paths with him feel as if they were his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Karen; four children, Nicole Thompson, Whitney Kerr, J.R. Swendseid, and Robyn Imrie; eight grandchildren, Rylee and Ryenn Thompson, Colton, Kyler, and Hudson Kerr, Caden Swendseid, Holden and Hunter Imrie; sons-in-law, Tommy Thompson, Andy Kerr, and Jason Imrie; daughter-in-law, Amanda Swendseid; and brother, Chad Swendseid.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 15th, 2019 at 10am at Saddleback Church. A reception will follow from 11-12:30pm. The family invites you back to their house for an open house celebration of life for Roc beginning at 2:30pm.

  1. Roc was a great guy. I know he will be missed by all

  2. Dan Walsh says:

Roc was a stabilizer at our early morning gym. He was always the first one there, waiting for the door to open at 6am. Those of us that graduated (some of us decades ago) from cardiac rehab call ourselves Gym Rats. (Who else gets up that early?) Roc was funny, smart, generous and loved to laugh. Many of us joined him at the American Legion to share stories. He has been and will continue to be missed by all of us. Our prayers and warm thoughts go out to Karen and the entire family. Please hold on to the many wonderful memories you shared with Roc, I know that I will forever. Dan

    1. We are sorry to hear about Roc. The Harvey family has happy memories of time together with the Swendseids. Our thoughts are with you!

  3. NORMAN ABBOD says:

I’LL MISS ROC. I WORKED OUT WITH ROC AT THE FITNESS FIRST GYM. I VISITED ROC TWICE AT SADDLEBACK HOSPITAL AND SPOKE TO HIM ONCE ALTHOUGH HE HAD A HARD TIME SPEAKING. MY WIFE AND I VISITED ROC AT UCSD NOT BEING AWARE THAT HE HAD BEEN UNCONCIOUS FOR ABOUT A WEEK. ROC DIED AN HOUR AND A HALF BEFORE WE ARRIVED. WE ARE VERY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS.

  4. Roc and I applied for, and unfortunately received, a summer job working together in a veneering factory following our last year of high school. The work was hard, grueling, and hot – working next to heat presses veneering doors for eight hours a day, but the laughter between us was never ending. Shortly after that we received our draft notices and drove together to downtown LA to take our induction physicals, again laughing all the way. We pretended to be hard of hearing durning the audible exam and you know how that turned out. Roc reported to duty shortly thereafter. My heart breaks knowing he is no longer with us.
