Obituary

The morning of December 27, 2020, Robert Schoonmaker; 91 years of age, passed away in his sleep. He was a resident of Laguna Woods nine years.

He led a very successful career recruiting for the home building industry as founder and President of his company; Building Industry Associates of California, which he started in 1999.

Robert was a proud father of three children; son Ted and his wife Ashley; a daughter Nancy Faith, and a daughter Debra. Sadly, Robert was predeceased by his beloved daughter, Debra. Debra’s fiancé Stuart, remains close to her family. Robert was also predeceased by his stepson, Steve Sibley. Nieces Brenda and Karen’s phone calls were always a special delight.

Robert was a proud grandfather of four grandchildren; Ted’s three daughters; Jessie, Brooke, and Tatum; and Nancy’s daughter; Natalie, and husband Billy.

Bob always said he had a great life, with his consistent viewpoint that “life is beautiful”. His adventurous spirit mastered skiing, flying as his own pilot; and always loved the beautiful waves of the ocean at the helm of “Gallant Lady,” whenever he could.

In his late 80s, he wanted to try hang gliding and parasailing. He did both, loving the experience. He enjoyed music at the end of his busy days listening to his favorite songs. “Braille Audiobooks for the Blind” kept him active in his lifelong love of history, closely listening to learn something new.

Sundays at Saddleback Church, Laguna Woods were very important to him. Sermons were listened to intently, always eager for more. Robert practiced and loved his relationship with the Lord. His faith was witnessed and shared in his Laguna Woods life with his good friend and neighbor, Dawn.

Robert made friends easily with his ready smile wherever he called home. His daughter Nancy Faith says, “Dad was one of God’s best creations.” He will be missed by all.

Chapel service will be held at O’Connor Mortuary January 16, 2021. Due to current Covid pandemic circumstances, attendance is via alternative notification.

Robert Bruce, You are my lasting impression of a brave courageous man who never lost sight that, “life is beautiful”, although your earthly eyes grew blind from macular degeneration, or slowed by an earthly body grown weak with affliction. You are missed and remembered with joy for the wonderful friendship we shared through laughter and tears. It was my honor to know you, unforgettable you.
    With love always, forever.
    Dawn

  2. Bob, It was always good to see your smiling face on your patio as I walked by your house. I remember the love you had for Buddy and all the good play times you had with him. May you rest in peace.

  3. My dear Uncle Bob ….. I love and miss you with all my heart and soul. You took me into your home at the age of 19 without ever meeting me, and helped me find my first job in San Francisco. I will always remember your kind heart, strong will, laughter, acceptance, friendship and love. All my love, forever. Your Niece, Karen
