Obituary

Richard Miles Allen, born May 12, 1945 in Los Angeles, passed away unexpectedly June 14, 2014. Rich was the youngest son of Marion and Phyllis (ne Sorenson) Allen, and brother of Jeffrey Allen.

He attended Morningside High School in Inglewood graduating in 1963. After high school, he spent a year traveling through Europe in a VW bus and by motorcycle. Upon returning to the United States, he continued his education and received a Bachelors degree in Economics from Sacramento State University circa 1970.

Rich embraced life with both hands. He was quick to laugh and even quicker to forgive. His passions included cooking, motorcycles, tennis and staying fit. He was known for his loving kindness and wicked sense of humor. In 2005, he married the love of his life, Teri Fitzpatrick. Together they traveled the world visiting such places as Machu Pichu, the Great Wall of China, Tibet, Japan, Ireland, Paris and the Amazon. At home in Rancho Santa Margarita they often welcomed their large extended family and friends and also enjoyed their desert home in La Quinta California.

Rich’s sons Mark (Wendy) and Madison (Mieke) have blessed the family with five grandchildren: Jake, Trevor, Bryce, Milyes and Mason. Richard was also stepfather to Lauren Younce and Avery Francis, as well as grandchildren Skyler and Marley.

In 1983, Rich became a successful entrepreneur founding Select Equipment Sales, Inc. in Buena Park, which is now operated by his sons.

“Rich and I were best friends in high school and although our lives turned in different directions, we continued on into adulthood to make many a memory together. After the carefree times of dating, surfing and generally having fun, we later shared the challenges of young adulthood, having and supporting a family and losing loved ones. Rich was always a kind, generous, intelligent and thoughtful man who was loved by many. So very sorry for his entire family and from my entire family, please accept our sincerest condolences.”

  3. What does one say when a man who kept himself in great shape, love his wife, children and life as much as possible suddenly dies @ just 69 !?

Knew Rich through my wife, Brenda a friend of Teri’s.

Rich has left me with a desire to live life to it’s fullest and to love everyday those who are the most important.

Richie as I called him was one of my favorite cousins. I baby sat him when he was 4 years old. His mom, my aunt asked me to help out when she had a surgery, I was 15 then, I was there 2 weeks and again on a camping trip with the family. I am deeply saddened by his passing. He was such a gentleman and loved by us all. My heartfelt sympathy to the family. Love, Cousin Elaine

Teri, Mark, Madison, Lauren and Avery, I am so sorry that you’ve lost Rich. I just saw it on Facebook, as I was going to send him a message. Any of us who had him in our lives are lucky. He was a wonderful guy, with a wicked sense of humor! I send you all love and hugs. He loved you all so much.
