IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard John
Kroll
March 10, 1940 – March 8, 2026
Richard John Kroll lived a life guided by faith, animated by a spirit of adventure, and devoted above all to family. A proud patriot, accomplished attorney, and lifelong aviator at heart, he approached the world with curiosity, conviction, and compassion.
Born March 10, 1940, in Flint, Michigan, Richard passed away on March 8, 2026, just two days shy of his 86th birthday. He was the son of Loretta Orlowski and Walter Kroll. At the age of 16, he moved to California, where he would go on to build his life, career, and family.
Richard became a respected attorney, dedicating his professional life to the pursuit of justice and the defense of those who could not defend themselves. He carried a deep compassion for the innocent and a steadfast belief in standing up for what was right.
He also proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Air Force Reserves, reflecting a lifelong patriotism and love for the United States.
Richard shared 60 devoted years of marriage with his beloved wife, Judith Mader Kroll, whom he married on October 23, 1965. Together they built a life rooted in faith, love, and family.
A man of curiosity and adventure, Richard held a lifelong passion for flying, travel, and discovering new places. Some of his happiest moments were spent during summers in Homer, Alaska, where he reveled in the beauty of the land and the freedom of the open sky. He found joy in great music, good food, lively conversation, and abundant laughter, and he was rarely without a faithful dog by his side.
A devout Catholic, Richard's faith guided his life. He prayed often for those who were sick or in need, living with quiet generosity and compassion. One of his favorite passages of scripture came from 1 Corinthians 13:
"Love is patient, love is kind."
Above all, Richard cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Judith Mader Kroll; his daughters Kelle Kroll, Dr. Gigi McConnaughey, Wendi Kroll, and Elaina Bertrand; nine grandchildren Caitlin Remmel, Jacqueline Remmel, Chandler Gohres, Cassi Gohres, James McConnaughey, Ryan Remmel, Jenna McConnaughey, Kyle McConnaughey, and Aubrey Bertrand; and two great-grandchildren, Leo and Ethan Remmel, as well as his eldest sibling and sister, Marilynne Treadaway.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his two elder brothers: Edward Kroll and Gerald Kroll.
A Funeral Mass celebrating Richard's life will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Timothy Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Richard's memory may be made to Water's Edge Pregnancy Care Center in Homer, Alaska.
Richard will be remembered for his faith, compassion, humor, patriotism, and unwavering devotion to his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
