Obituary

Richard Frederick Torres Sr. of Rancho Mission Viejo, California, passed away at the age of 73 on Monday, September 17th, 2018 at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, surrounded by his family and friends.

Richard was born on May 2nd, 1945, in Los Angeles, California.  He attended Mount Carmel High School in Los Angeles, California, class of 1963.  Richard dedicated his life to our country by enlisting in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1965 – 1967.  Richard had a remarkable 35-year career with United Parcel Service (UPS), starting as a driver and later becoming an Area Sales Manager.  Richard married Denise, the love of his life, on December 28th, 1995.  Richard retired with UPS, traded in his brown uniform for a pair of Mickey Mouse ears and became a cast member at Disneyland in Anaheim, California.  Richard touched the hearts of many park-goers and all of his fellow cast members.  Our fun-loving and outgoing social butterfly – Richard the husband, the father, the grandfather (Poppy), the godfather, the brother, the uncle, and the friend – will be greatly missed.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Denise Torres; his five children: Angelique Campos (husband Eduardo Campos), Richard Torres, Jr., Nichole Gonzalez (husband Thomas Gonzalez), Cynthia Smith (husband Kyle Smith), and Brittany Koca (husband Brandon Koca); his three sisters: Barbara Marinelli (husband Rod Marinelli), Rose Bobela (husband Peter Bobela), and Patti Beadles (husband Jim Beadles); his cousin (brother) Larry Contri (wife Rosie Contri); and his three grandchildren: Harrison Devonald, Brayden Devonald, and Ella Gonzalez.  Richard was preceded in death by his mother Angela Torres, who went home to be with the Lord in 1961 at the young age of 42, and his two aunts, Cecilia Lara and Eva Contri, who passed away in 1977 and 2006, respectively.

A funeral mass for Richard will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 23rd  at Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano (31520 Camino Capistrano, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675).  Following mass, a Celebration of Richard’s life is planned from 11:30 PM – 3:00 PM at Plaza de Magdalena (31781 Camino Capistrano, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675).

Richard will be laid to rest at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 24th  at Miramar National Cemetery (5795 Nobel Drive, San Diego, CA 92122).

In lieu of flowers, the family graciously requests that donations be made in Honor of Richard Torres to Pets for Vets (http://bit.ly/RichardTorresPetsForVetsDonation) or Wounded Warrior Project (http://bit.ly/RichardTorresWWP).

  2. I will never forgot you our talks. How much we dislike the VA. How much you loved Football our ride to Oxnard and Cowboy camp our argument at In and Out burgers and who was paying. The trust you had in me to take care of your beloved Dartanian.

  3. When Rick entered a room it lit up from his big smile and those beautiful dimples. He always had an upbeat personality even when he was going through a hard time. I worked with Rick for 27 years and I am so greatful that I got to know him. There is a big hole down here on earth where your spirit filled but I know you are making a lot of people laugh up there in Heaven. One of their Angels has come home. Denise, I know how hard you two fought to be together and I know that you were each other’s solemate. Rick will always be sitting on your shoulder guiding and taking care of you. Hugs

I worked with Rick when I was assignedto the Region. He always had a huge smile and warm handshake. Rick was concerned on how you were doing then down to business. He excelled in everything he did in both personal and professional lives. He will be missed.
