Obituary

Renee Cammie Atencio, 35, Mission Viejo, joined our creator on February 2, 2014.

She was born to Henrietta Atencio and the late Ralph Atencio on December 2, 1978 in Mission Viejo. The saying it takes a village to raise a family was certainly written for Renee as she was raised by Greg and Deby Welty along with her parents and her brothers and sisters. She graduated from Aliso Niguel High School class of 1996.

Renee was a member of the Juaneno Tribe of Mission Indians, a MOPS group at church, a member of Saddleback Church and an avid volunteer room mother in her daughter Katie’s first grade class.

Renee is survived by her two children, Katalina Ortiz, 6 and Steven Ortiz, 2. She is also survived by her mother Henrietta Atencio, brothers, Rudy, David, Thomas and Brandon; and her sisters Deby and Amanda.

A viewing will be held at O’Connors Mortuary Laguna Hills on Thursday from 4:00-8:00pm. Services will be Saturday at Rancho Viejo Saddleback Church at 11:00am with burial and reception to follow.

She will live on through her children and we will all be that village to them.

In the words of our dragonfly, “Have a blessed day.”

  1. At I sit and stare at this computer screen it still doesn’t seem real. Renee you will never know what our talks and keep your heads up meant to me. Your lighting of sage for me,..your talks to god for me. They all will hold a place in my heart. You told me to listen to a song ” A little bit stronger” a while back and I did. The words touched my soul I listed to the song before but never heard the words. I wish that you were here to light some sage with me. We can listen to Sara Evans and talk the night away. I will miss you more than you will ever know.

Auntie CHENODA* will kiss them babies for you whenever I can. I love you, may you rest in paradise!!

A message Renee sent to me at a down time in my life:

That’s all we can do! Let go and let God…it’s not for us to understand unfortunately. He has a plan and we can rack out heads trying to figure out and it will never make sense. Hang in there. This to shall pass. You are a strong native woman.

  2. Renee was a beautiful child of The Lord. She was obedient 2 weeks before her passing to make sure I was invited to her group for bible study. I totally fell in love with this girl when I first met her. She was kind, loving, funny, full of energy, fabulous mommy, cared for the hurting, and how she loved The Lord, wow how she loved The Lord. I missed out not knowing her before, but I know with the faith that we have in Christ I will see her again. God bless the family, may you be constantly filled with God’s presence. I’m so sorry for your loss. Your on my heart. Love Cynthia

Renee would laugh at my crude jokes, watch Ru Paul’s Drag Race, bring me goodies when I was hungry and smile with twinkling eyes.
I never knew how sick she was or how much pain she was in, nor did she want me to know.
I felt she was a kindred spirit, my Twinster.
I will miss you terribly but you taught me not to complain and work on my grammar.
    Love,
    Kim

An angel on earth and now in heaven. Rest in peace, sweet Mama. Your time on earth was too short. I will miss your beautiful soul.

  5. Just when I thought all hope was lost, God gave me Renee. We seemed to be the black sheep of the group and we loved it. You gave me strength to learn to grow when I felt I had no roots to ground me. You gave me a friend when I wanted one the least. Now I cant Imagine life without knowing you are always right there. You trusted me and I know what a gift having your trust was. Thank you for allowing me in your life. You will never be forgotten, and you will live on through all of us.
