Obituary

Ranjit Nihal Goonetilleke, a devoted father, friend, and physician, passed away unexpectedly on October 17, 2024. Born on March 10, 1945, in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Nihal was the second of three children born to Arnold Valentine and Vivienne Bridget Goonetilleke. He grew up with his sister Sunil and older brother Chrys.

A bright student, Nihal attended St. Thomas’ College in Mt. Lavinia, graduating at the top of his class, before pursuing his medical degree at the University of Ceylon. His career took him around the world, including residencies in London, Surrey, Scotland, and New Orleans at Tulane Medical School. Eventually, he completed a fellowship in Cardiology at Louisiana State University Medical School and established his own practice in Orange County, California, in 1978.

As a Sri Lankan cardiologist in Orange County in the 1970s, Nihal encountered challenges and skepticism, yet he persevered with steadfast dedication. Over time, he earned deep respect for his expertise and compassionate care. His cardiology practice, located next to the hospital where he spent many years, became a trusted resource for countless patients. Nihal was a resident doctor at Orange County Global Medical Center (formerly Western Medical Center) in Santa Ana, where he practiced with tireless commitment.

Nihal’s dedication to his patients and his profession was matched by his integrity, intelligence, and generosity. He cared deeply for his patients, prioritizing their well-being and treating each one with a genuine personal touch. He was a member of both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Cardiovascular Diseases, and held fellowships with the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Physicians. Nihal was also a proud MENSA member.

Outside his practice, Nihal’s life was filled with a passion for tennis, travel, music, and hosting memorable Christmas gatherings, where he played piano and led singalongs. He had a deep love for spicy foods, political debates, and friendly banter, and was known for his warmth and lively personality. Despite being one of the few Democrats among his colleagues, he always enjoyed friendly discussions in the Doctor’s Dining Room.

Above all, Nihal adored his children, Alicia (32) and Bryan (30). A devoted father, he was there for every triumph and every challenge, instilling in them values of hard work, kindness, and curiosity about the world. Alicia and Bryan, who live in Los Angeles and New York City respectively, were the pride of his life.

Nihal is survived by his children, Alicia and Bryan, and remembered by friends, colleagues, and all who were blessed to know him. His legacy of kindness, integrity, and compassion lives on through the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed.
