Obituary

Ramona Deloris Schaeffer Holland

Ramona Deloris Schaeffer was born in Bakersfield, CA on April 12th, 1942 to parents Edward and Deloris Schaeffer and passed away surrounded by family on January 31st, 2021 at her home in Mission Viejo, CA.

She graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1960, and Fresno State College in 1964. Her degree was in Elementary Education. She taught in Oildale and Lakewood, California before joining the Department of Defense School System. There she first taught in Karamursel, Turkey and, in 1968, married Army Lieutenant John Holland. Ramona traveled with and encouraged him throughout a 30-year Army career. She taught in several states and 2 overseas locations but particularly loved teaching in Berlin, Germany in November 1989 at the time the wall came down.

Ramona and John have two adult married children, Erica Sheehy (Jerry) and Darren Holland (Christina), and 3 grandchildren: Nathaniel, Hannah, and Ian.

Ramona was an avid and accomplished artist who loved painting and traveled extensively in Europe to view the works of the masters. Ramona improved her artist skills through art classes at the University of New Mexico and Saddleback Community College. She strongly encouraged her granddaughter Hannah’s creative ability in art. Ramona learned piano early and was a talented singer, seriously involved with church music. Ramona loved her loom and showed great creativity in her weaving. She was a charismatic Bible Study teacher and faithful believer who communicated her Christian beliefs around the world. She loved the Lord and believed and exemplified the truth of the Bible. She had a beautiful smile that brought happiness to all who saw it, especially her husband John.

She especially loved her 6 Westie dogs and 1 Sheltie that preceded her, and she looked forward to being with them and Jesus in heaven. She will be greatly missed by her family, her church, and her friends. Ramona is also survived by a sister, Sandra Schaeffer, and niece, Nicole Jordan.

    Denver,
How did you hear about this? Great memories of Karamursel.

  5. John, so sorry to hear from Marietta today that you lost your Ramona. So many, many years ago that our lives crossed in Karamursel. Although we haven’t spoken in all these years, yours and Ramona’s names were mentioned from time to time over the years. Gone are the days of our teaching overseas, but the memories are as vivid as yesterday.

My deepest sympathy over the loss of your Ramona. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I was really touched by an entry of one of her former students.
