Obituary

Ralph Oscar Schulte passed away peacefully on January 8, 2019 in Mission Viejo. Ralph was born in St. Louis, Missouri on October 1, 1925, the fourth of five sons to Erma and Christopher Schulte. He is survived by his wife Mary Ellen, their 12 children, 32 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Ralph attended St. Mary’s High School in St. Louis before joining the US Navy to serve in WW II. He was aboard the USS William M. Hobbyon the Inland Sea of Japan as it cleared the area of naval mines in preparation for the arrival of US occupation troops. After the war, he earned a business degree from St. Louis University and married Mary Ellen in 1947. His employment in the moving truck industry brought their growing family to Itasca, Illinois and then to Indianola, Iowa. From there Ralph moved his family out to Fullerton, California, then to the San Francisco Bay area and later back to southern California, where he would live the rest of his life.

A devout Catholic, Ralph put his family first. He relished watching his children grow up, get married, and have their own children. Sports came next — he loved watching baseball, especially his beloved St. Louis Cardinals. His house on Saddleback Drive was home to many generations of family and friends who will always remember his generosity, his steadfast character and the impeccable timing of his wisecracks.

His funeral will be held at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Mission Viejo on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. A visitation will be held at O’Connor Mortuary, 25301 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Hills on January 16, 2019 from 7-9 p.m.

  1. My deepest sympathy to the Schulte Family. Ralph was a superstar. An amazing man, Dad, Granddad, family man, friend and sport enthusiast. The consummate family man he had 12 gorgeous, fun-loving, successful children and many grandchildren to light up his life. He was a kind and generous friend to many and the doors to his beautiful home were always open for those that needed to watch a game on TV, cool off in the pool, talk things over, or have a meal or just hang with Ralph. I will always remember holidays year round at his home in Mission Viejo, California. It was just a fun place to be. I am honored to have known him and to be an in-law of sorts. May the Lord grant many happy memories to comfort his family.

  2. What a warm, friendly, welcoming man! I met Mr. Ralph at the wedding of my son and Mr. Ralph’s beautiful granddaughter Cameron. I felt so comfortable with him from the very beginning of our introduction. He had such a fun, sweet spirit. I remember him as a jokester who just seemed to love life and people. Even though I was not around him a lot or knew him for long, he gave me the feeling that I had known him forever. He reminded me of my dad in certain ways. He was a person that was so positive and fun to be around. It made my heart melt to know that he loved sports and especially baseball as my family does. I knew this would be someone who my son Kyle would definitely be able to connect with as he gained a new family with his marriage to Cameron. I later learned that he and Kyle spent many moments talking baseball. This does not surprise me. I praise God for the friendship they shared. My heartfelt sympathy is with the family of this great man. I feel certain that Mr. Ralph is with Jesus and we will one day again be able to share fun stories. I so look forward to it. May God bless you all as you celebrate his life. Much love! Marsha
