Ralph was a friend for over 30 years. In those 30 years we talked about two things. Exclusively. World War II and basketball. I was lucky enough to see Ralph on the day he passed. We talked about two things. The same two things we always did. He was a mentor of mine regarding the history of World War II. Even though I wrote a thesis on the subject, the historian Ralph Tackes always knew more about every topic I would toss his way. When we discussed basketball, I had to perennially take my hat off to the founder, president, chief operating officer of the “I Hate the Lakers” club. As a proud club member myself, I only wish I could have displayed half the passion that Ralph had for this worthy club. So on the night that Ralph passed, the Lakers lost on a last second shot. To me, it doesn’t get any more poetic than that. God gave Ralph a salute on the way out. God bless you Ralph. I will miss you.

Happy Birthday Dad. I know you’re spending this one in the greatest place possible —heaven. Thanks for being such an incredible Dad, mentor, and friend. I will forever be grateful for the time we shared together whether it was sports, travel, deep conversation, or just hanging out. I am so proud to be your son, and will carry forward your values, principles, and genuine love of life for remainder of my years. Love always. Tom

I did not have the honor of sharing time with Ralph. I do have the pleasure of calling both of his sons friend – especially Tom. If the apples do not fall from the tree, then the world is a lesser place today with the passing of their father. God bless the Tackes family. Thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Cory, Janet, and Ryan
